When it comes to affordable and on-trend furniture, Swedish giant IKEA remains a favorite among us Apartment Therapy editors. Along with sleek styles that work in a myriad of spaces and prices that are undeniably hard to beat, the brand produces basic pieces that are just begging for a DIY IKEA facelift. However, when you’re ready to trade up your BESTA media cabinet for furnishings you didn’t build yourself, you may find yourself looking for modern furniture stores.

That’s where we come in. Here at AT, we’re constantly looking for new and exciting brands with a flair for modern design and home decor. Below, let our list of 20 modern furniture stores (both online and brick-and-mortar) be your guide to your next furniture upgrade. If you love brands like Article, Joybird, and CB2, read on.

1. Castlery

Deemed the “Brooklinen of furniture” by AT staff, direct-to-consumer brand Castlery strikes a balance between contemporary and classic designs with mid-century modern flair at surprisingly reasonable prices. They especially excel in living room, bedroom, and dining room furniture, as well as outdoor sets.

Castlery prides itself on its quality craftsmanship, and the brand’s predominantly neutral color palette and natural finishes ensure the pieces blend easily into your existing decor. The pieces are made to outlast trends, and make a solid foundation for the rest of your interior design.

AT’s House Tour Director, Adrienne Breaux, was so impressed with the Hugg nesting table when she saw it IRL at the Castlery showroom. Its oval silhouette boasts a smooth, sprawling surface area and ingeniously hides two padded seats underneath!

2. Article

Modern and minimalist and competitively priced, Article’s collection of mid-century and Scandinavian-inspired furniture was designed with urban living and small spaces in mind. An overwhelmingly majority of the brand’s pieces are made to fit in tight spaces, like modular sofas, extendable dining tables, and storage furniture that utilizes vertical space to the fullest.

Article makes many of its pieces from solid wood, high-quality leather and durable fabrics, providing longevity and adding value to the already affordable prices. Because Article sells pieces directly to buyers, the brand can deliver premium products without premium prices.

While you could “cheat” the look of a sectional by buying the matching Sven ottoman (our Executive Home Director did just that), you won’t have to with this ready-made version. The MCM-inspired sectional gives you more space to sprawl out with its roomy chaise, and it’s upholstered in rich leather that’ll only get more beautiful with time.

3. Urban Outfitters Home

When you think of Urban Outfitters, you think of on-trend clothing with a boho twist, and the store’s home offerings are an extension of that whimsy, yet modern aesthetic. The store carries an eclectic selection of furniture, ranging from big-ticket items like bed frames and sofas to more decorative pieces, like lamps, cocktail tables, and rugs.

If you’re looking to find unique furnishings that are a equal parts retro, youthful, and statement making, head to Urban Outfitters. While some pieces are on the pricier side, there are still plenty of budget-friendly, style-forward options. Even better, they also recently launched a landing page exclusively dedicated to decorating small spaces and dorms — in style, of course.

A rattan bed frame never gets old. This Urban Outfitters bed takes the earthy effect to the next level by combining rattan panels with a high-contrast, mango wood frame. No wonder it caught our eye!

4. Burrow

Burrow burst onto the home furnishings scene with its collection of durable and minimalist modular seating and modern tables, but the brand has since come to cover rugs and accessories, too. Burrow prides itself on flexibility and versatility, with many of its pieces constructed in such a way that they can be moved, expanded, or rearranged to fit your ever-evolving needs. This is particularly handy for people who tend to move often, from apartment to apartment.

You can see pieces in the flesh at Burrow’s flagship in New York’s SoHo neighborhood or at one of their partner showrooms. Each piece of Burrow furniture is made from sturdy, sustainably sourced hardwood and nontoxic fabrics. The sofas include a few handy features, like built-in USB chargers, stain-resistant upholstery, and tool-free assembly.

There are tons of reasons why editors love the Nomad sofa. First, it’s great for small spaces at only 85 inches wide. It’s modular, meaning you can switch up the configuration as your needs change. And arguably most important, it’s super stylish, spanning MCM and traditional aesthetics alike.

5. Nathan James

Home Editor Danielle recently described Nathan James, another staff favorite, as “an ever-evolving collection of home furnishings that look like West Elm and AllModern had a baby, but are — wait for it! — all available at IKEA prices.” The budget-friendly brand is all about the modern, minimalist aesthetic, and pieces are clean, neutral, and versatile.

Nathan James focuses on blending trendy materials and silhouettes with practicality and functionality. Many pieces are great for cozy spaces, offering an affordable and attainable way to achieve an Instagram-worthy home. Suffice it to say, Nathan James is one retailer we’re going to keep an eye on when it comes to finding pieces with high style at low price points.

This stylish writing desk looks like something you’d find in a high-end home store, which is impressive given the budget-friendly price. At 41.9 inches wide, it gives you a decent amount of surface space and storage to work with, including an open shelf and pull-out drawer.

6. H&M Home

H&M Home takes the clothing brand’s chic, trend-forward style and translates it into home decor, leaning into modern, earthy, and often Scandinavian-inspired design. The pieces are affordable, but they look expensive and luxurious, often featuring organic textures, muted color palettes, and silhouettes. While you won’t find bigger furniture pieces like sofas and dining tables, H&M Home makes up for it with accent pieces galore.

The store has great options for people who want to create an elevated, trendy space without breaking the bank. With everything from cozy bed linens and blankets to chic storage, home decor, dining essentials, and so much more, you can outfit your entire home in style at H&M — and all at an affordable price.

Don’t sleep on the storage selection at H&M. You might miss gems like this cute scalloped wall shelf. The sleek metal material is instantly softened by the playful border, perfect for displaying anything from kids’ books to framed photos, knick-knacks, and more.

7. AllModern

If you wanted to furnish your house in one fell swoop without going over budget, AllModern has you covered. The e-super store carries everything from living room furniture and dining essentials to bedroom staples and home office furnishings. AllModern’s overall aesthetic is bright, fresh, and clean, with simple silhouettes that borrow from mid-century and Scandinavian design.

AllModern offers fast shipping options, and many of the brand’s pieces cater to small spaces with versatile and multifunctional designs. They also carry collections from big modern brands like Kartell, Marimekko, Umbra, and more. So consider AM a great choice for designer items and budget-friendly look-alikes, too.

Surprise! This curvy accent chair hides a sneaky swivel beneath its low-profile base. Its foam-and-fiber-filled cushions are upholstered in chenille fabric for all-over softness — and they’re reversible, so you can sit back in comfort for years to come.

8. ABC Carpet & Home

Though ABC Carpet & Home is best known for its seemingly infinite selection of high-quality carpets and rugs, the brand also offers an eclectic assortment of furniture, including a wealth of modern and contemporary pieces. The overall aesthetic skews slightly bohemian and artistic, so while pieces are modern, they’re also rich with texture, color, and unique finishes.

ABC Carpet & Home’s prices run the gamut, as does the retailer’s catalog, which includes furniture and decor for every room of the house in addition to gifts, lighting, and even jewelry. If you’re willing to spend a little bit of extra cash for pieces that are high-quality and will add a soulful vibe to your space, its worth a visit to the brand’s New York City flagship store or Brooklyn outlet to scope out your favorites.

This petite swivel chair features fiber-wrapped foam cushions for a plush seat that keeps its shape. Its curved barrel back is enveloping in the best way, making it an accent chair you’ll actually want to sit in. Plus, there are over 40 upholstery fabrics available for a look that’s guaranteed to work with your decor.

9. Industry West

Industry West strikes the perfect mix of modern and industrial design, featuring pieces made from materials like wood, steel, and leather that feel contemporary and clean. The brand’s offerings are varied, yet somehow cohesive, including statement pieces like sculptural chairs and marble tables as well as mid-century modern sofas and simple everyday barstools.

Everything in Industry West’s curated selection of furniture, lighting, and decor looks like they belong in an urban loft. Since their inventory is small, pieces tends to sell out, so if you see something you love, be sure to grab it while you can.

Mid-century modern or contemporary boho — this Cane Bed channels both looks flawlessly. The black ash wood frame features rounded corners for a softer look that’ll make it the focal point of your bedroom.

10. Joybird

Joybird’s selection of endlessly customizable furniture feels like mid-century modern meets Technicolor. The pieces feature classic mid-century modern silhouettes, with tapered legs and the clean lines you’d expect, but countless upholstery options and finishes allow you to create a personalized piece that perfectly matches your desired color palette. Joybird is not your everyday minimalist brand — it doesn’t shy away from vibrant hues or playful patterns.

Though Joybird got its start making sofas, the brand now carries all types of customizable furniture including accent chairs, bed frames, dining tables, dining chairs, and decor. Pieces tend to be a little bit more affordable than the likes of CB2 and West Elm, but the fact that the brand is direct-to-consumer means you don’t have to compromise quality to save money.

Sharp angles, tapered legs, and a tufted back … it’s all here on the Hughes chair, giving the piece its vintage, mid-century modern look. Complete with medium-firm cushions and a deep seat, it’s ready for lounging.

11. West Elm

You probably already know about this dream of a mid-century modern decor store. West Elm delivers a mix of pieces for every room of the house that cater to both timeless and trendy aesthetics. With each new collection, the brand is becoming increasingly more sustainability-minded, utilizing more eco-friendly materials and Fair Trade Certified wood. Many of West Elm’s pieces were designed for city living, blending functionality and style.

But, one thing to note when shopping there: Items marked as “commercial grade” or “contract grade” are specially designed for commercial use with materials that will hold up well to wear and tear. Spend a little more on one of these durable but still super-stylish pieces, and you might be looking at your next family heirloom. Or you’ll just save yourself a few extra headaches if you have young kids and pets.

Editors say the Urban sectional is the best small space sofa you can find at West Elm. Its 111-inch-wide silhouette hides a pull-out queen-sized bed, and there’s an extra-roomy storage concealed in its plush chaise lounge. Plus, there are over 50 upholstery options to pick from.

12. Restoration Hardware

Restoration Hardware’s collection of home furnishings and decor lies at the intersection of modernity and luxury. The brand sells a complete line of upscale modern furniture, light fixtures, textiles, and other home furnishings. There’s even a baby, kids, and teen line. Restoration Hardware uses high-quality materials to yield statement-making pieces, which are often oversized and dramatic. Think sprawling sectionals and grand dining tables.

Though the pieces are stunning, they are among the most expensive on this list, so while very few of us will be able to deck out our homes with furniture from Restoration Hardware, a piece here and there can be a great anchor piece.

Editors agree that if you have the budget, Restoration Hardware is absolutely worth it. The Luisa Chair especially so, with its curved, enveloping silhouette and luxe, ultra-comfy seat. There are over 100 upholstery fabrics to choose from, too!

13. Design Within Reach

With a wide assortment of pieces rooted in mid-century modern design, Design Within Reach is lush with premium, investment-worthy pieces. The retailer carries home furnishings from iconic designers including Charles and Ray Eames, Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, among others, all of which share a clean, functional, and timeless aesthetic.

Design Within Reach curates a collection of pieces that are made to last, many of which are heirloom quality. If you’re looking for authentic modern classic and contemporary pieces that will withstand the test of time and outlast trendy imitations, this store is your one-stop shop for all things modern for every room in (and out) of your home.

Everyone loves the Eames chair. Its tufted cushions and sleek, molded wood silhouette make it one of the most iconic pieces in modern design. That being said, it’s a hefty investment — but owning one is like having a piece of design history in your home.

14. Jonathan Adler

One of the most popular names in modern home furnishings, Jonathan Adler’s pieces are playful and glamorous, infusing mid-century modern design with glam, art-deco, and even a hint of pop art. If you want pieces that are playful yet luxurious that are bound to make a statement, you’ve come to the right place. Jonathan Adler’s use of vibrant colors and visually interesting patterns are eye-catching and creative, and the materials are high-end.

Fans of Jonathan Adler’s quirky pottery will be happy to know that he has not one but two lines of furniture these days. Shop glam modern shelving units, coffee tables, sofas, and more at JonathanAdler.com, and hit up Amazon for his lower-priced Now House line.

We’ve fawned over Jonathan Adler rugs before, and this flat weave design stands out with its statement-making geometric pattern. It’s made to order using hand-dyed wool, and is plenty durable while still feeling soft underfoot.

15. Apt2B

Apt2B’s modern, urban aesthetic features minimal silhouettes, clean lines, and plenty of options to customize pieces to make them your own. The brand’s name reflects its target audience: people who live in apartments and small homes that need thoughtfully designed, compact furniture. Apt2B’s sofas, bedroom furnishings, and dining sets are casual, but elevated, and the price point is a little bit more affordable than the likes of West Elm or CB2.

Best of all, Apt2B offers free shipping for every product on the site. Beyond their goose-egg delivery fees, we love their riff on beloved mid-century silhouettes, classic modern seating, and edgy case goods, most of which are made in the USA.

Apt2B shoppers rave about the Bannister sleeper sofa. It’s 87 inches wide, so it’s perfect for smaller spaces. And it’s made to order using luxe, high-quality materials: including a solid wood frame and durable, hypoallergenic fabrics. The sloped arms, tufted back seat, and exposed wood base give it a vintage look, too.

16. Rejuvenation

Rejuvenation established itself first as a lighting brand alongside sister brands West Elm and Pottery Barn, but now it’s collection of modern home furnishings are just as popular. Rejuvenation borrows from heritage styles, like Shaker and Craftsman, and fuses them with modern design for pieces that are clean and refined, but still warm with natural finishes and elegant silhouettes.

Many of Rejuvenation’s pieces are custom or made-to-order, including upholstered furniture and dining tables, giving you the opportunity to truly make each piece your own. The brand’s timeless, heirloom-quality furnishings are pricey compared with some budget-friendly alternatives, but they’ll last for decades and beyond.

Almost every aspect of this Rejuvenation sofa is customizable. You can choose its overall width (from 72 to 108 inches), the seat depth, seat cushion type, and pick from over 30 upholstery fabrics. It’s like getting a couch that’s custom-made for your space!

17. Blu Dot

A little bit playful, entirely modern, and impressively functional, Blu Dot’s furniture is chic and minimalist, featuring geometric shapes and clean lines. The pieces are the stuff Pinterest dreams are made of, mainly because the brand’s take on minimalism is anything but boring. Unexpected pops of color, texture, and proportions mixed with a wide range of materials ranging from wood to brass and even marble make for pieces that eye-catching, yet surprisingly functional.

Blu Dot subscribes to ethical practices, high-quality craftsmanship, and producing as many of its pieces within the United States as possible. The brand also collaborates with independent designers from time to time, and is constantly refreshing its collection to stay current and innovative.

Among all of Blu Dot’s ultra-modern pieces, editors deemed the Guide sofa the most timeless. Its medium-firm seat cushions and plush back invite you to recline, while the wooden base gives it a bit of classy sophistication.

18. CB2

As Crate & Barrel’s more affordable, slightly hipper younger sibling, CB2 is full of on-trend furniture, designer collaborations from the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow and Lenny Kravitz and beautiful, design-forward decor. Though the brand has a wide assortment of home furnishings, unifying traits include contemporary designs, clean lines, and geometric elements that make for edgy, often urban-chic pieces.

CB2’s collection of modern furniture and decor includes everything from sectionals to serving utensils, and while it’s certainly pricier than budget-friendly alternatives, the price point strikes a balance between quality, durability, and design. If trendy, modern pieces suit your personal style, consider investing in a few foundational pieces from CB2, or if you’re on a tighter budget, check out the brand’s more affordable decor.

The Rodez sofa is hands-down one of the best leather sofas CB2 has to offer. It has super deep seats, a relaxed low profile, and luxe-looking upholstery that’d fit right into a cool, industrial space. It’s available in an 88-inch and a 105-inch version, so there’s a model to fit your space.

19. Wayfair

Think of Wayfair as a one-stop shop for all things home furnishings and decor. The online retailer is known for staying on top of the latest trends, especially mid-century modern pieces. Most pieces are priced on the more affordable side, and are often heavily discounted, though you can definitely find great deals on midrange and high-end furniture, too.

Wayfair doesn’t make its own furniture, but instead has a curated selection from a wide range of brands, including beloved favorites like George Oliver, Mercury Row, and Joss & Main. While most other furniture retailers have a substantial lead time for shipping and delivery, Wayfair offers fast shipping, so it’s a particularly great option if you need furniture fast.

AT’s former Shopping Writer, Morgan Pryor, says this narrow armoire was a game-changer in her small studio apartment. It holds an impressive amount of clothes despite its slim footprint: there’s a hanging rod at the top half, and a shelf at the bottom for two levels of storage. And for under $200? It’s unbeatable.

20. Walmart

Surprised? Hear me out. Catering to a handful of styles and budgets, you really can’t go wrong with Walmart. Like IKEA, the store offers competitive prices, making it affordable to update your home without breaking the bank. Walmart’s pieces are often trend-forward, and it’s not uncommon to find styles that have gone viral on social media lining the store’s shelves. The wide selection makes it easy to find items that fit in your space and match your personal style.

With convenient online and in-store shopping options, finding what you need is easy. Plus, Walmart often collaborates with designers (like Drew Barrymore) to create unique and stylish decor collections. Trust us, its decor is hard to resist!

Walmart’s Juliet line looks so much more expensive than it is, and the Arch Cabinet is no exception. Use it to display your favorite books, tchotchkes, and decor — or as a stylish stand-in for a kitchen pantry! You might want to act fast, because it’s on sale for under $300 right now.
