This 118-Year-Old Farmhouse Was a 7-Year-Long DIY Project
For seven years, Liz Kallembach and her husband completely renovated this house as a DIY project. “It was built in 1906 and our goal was to have the furnishings and decor fit the style, so that in the end you couldn’t tell what was new and what had always been there,” she writes of the home in Petersburg, Illinois, which also houses their daughter and pets.

“I love vintage and the thrill of a good thrift find!” Liz continues. “I love to paint and restore furniture and have a few pieces like my dining room hutch that I found at the Habitat for Humanity Restore for $75. I paired it with a cabinet that was the bottom piece to the hutch in my kitchen.”
Liz thinks you should head to thrift stores often to create a similar vibe. “I also have Google downloaded on my phone so I can snap a picture of an item and it will perform an image search, so that helps me decide the item’s worth,” she admits.
After seven years, Liz sold her Victorian farmhouse and almost all of her furnishings and moved into an apartment. You can follow her new design journey on her Instagram.
