Dakota Johnson’s Iconic Green Kitchen Inspired the Makeover in This 120-Year-Old Home
When Julia Jannon-Shields reflects on finding the two-bedroom rental loft she shares with her partner, Eric B. Alipio, the memories are laced with a feeling of magic. In 2024, Julia, a culturally responsive community planner, flicked through her camera roll after moving in. She stumbled upon photos from 2022 that looked eerily similar to her new home. Lo and behold, that’s exactly what they were.

“Needless to say, I was absolutely shocked — and a little spooked! It seems the last time the space was available, I came across it and fell in love,” Julia, who posts about their home on TikTok, says. “I remember that I wasn’t in a place to move at the time, but I screenshotted it as a reminder that seemingly unreal spaces exist in this dream city of mine! I now say I manifested my apartment, and I embrace the jokes from loved ones that say I am a witch.”
Unsurprisingly, the loft has been on Julia’s mind for several years. Not only does it have cozy, exposed red brick walls, but there’s also a whimsical spiral staircase that climbs between the 14-foot ceilings. Julia remembers that while touring the space, she and Eric didn’t have time to “pick [their] jaws up off the ground” because there were so many beautiful details.
After a year of living there, the couple has dubbed their loft the “Rainforest Cafe,” likely because of the reimagined dark green kitchen (Dakota Johnson-inspired!) and the abundance of lush plants.
“As we approach one year here of many more to come, I find that more than anything else, I love how it feels so distinctly like us,” Julia says of their loft. “While I am the mind behind our interior design, elements of who we both are come through our art, books, and furniture.”
