This Renovated 1914 House Sports Gorgeous Built-Ins and a Secret Cubby
Miranda Caldwell and Jeff Heckbert‘s semi-detached house in Toronto was built in 1914 and renovated top-to-bottom by a previous owner in 2019. Unfortunately, that last renovation revealed the home’s “solid bones, but it lacked personality.”

In the five years since they’ve owned the home, the couple have done plenty of their own renovations to add their own style to the space. They “cut into the perfectly good hardwood in our front entryway to install straight stacked tile so we could have a place to park our baby’s stroller,” for one.
They also created a gorgeous dining nook. “With the dining nook, we also added a wall in our dining room to opt for a LESS open-concept space, because we wanted to include more privacy to separate the powder room, which is decked out in Jellyfish wallpaper, by the way (installed by @wallpaperjenna). The jellyfishes remind us of our honeymoon in Italy, where we both got stung.”
The kitchen got an update, thanks to removable vinyl stickers. “The kitchen checkered look seemed like it was going to be a big renovation, but it’s actually removable vinyl stickers (in a color that matches the ‘dinner party’ dining nook). We wanted to try stickers before committing to re-doing the backsplash. The stickers ended up looking so good/real that we kept them,” Miranda writes.
“Jeff, my husband, is a carpenter and emerging furniture designer (Heck Yeah Home),” Miranda continues explaining of the couple’s updates. “His presence is felt all throughout this home because so many of the built-ins and furniture pieces were handcrafted by him.”
“For example, he built our son, Huey (5 months old), a wavy solid walnut crib, inspired by the wavy vintage console we refinished as a Facebook Marketplace find (you can see this console in one of the bedrooms).”
