Renters Gave This “Stark” 1920s Spanish-Style House a Lived-In, Old-World Glow
“I have previously always lived in craftsman style houses, so moving out west to Los Angeles where Spanish style homes thrive was definitely a challenge for me,” begins Hadley Campagna, who’s been renting this 1400-square-foot house in Los Angeles’ Los Feliz neighborhood for three years with her husband.

The two-bedroom Spanish-style house was built in the 1920s, and Hadley admits that she was a little worried if her style “would clash with the smooth stucco walls and rounded archways, but instead it created a beautiful blend of textures and warmth.” She and her husband moved into the space with a lot of previous furniture, and says trying to decide between what did and didn’t work in the new space was a challenge.
“I wasn’t working against a timeline necessarily – I focused on completing our living and dining room first given that those are the spaces we spend the most time in,” Hadley writes. “A lot of times it’s putting the space together and figuring out what is working and what isn’t.”
“I often found myself swapping newer pieces of furniture that we had previously bought, with older ones; trying to bring in that sense that the home has history, that it is lived in,” Hadley continues.
“It’s not always easy finding vintage pieces. Some I stumble upon and it’s kismet, others a long search of knowing what direction I want to go and scouring the internet and vintage shops to find what I was hoping for.”
