Some families might be familiar with outgrowing their homes. Maddison Milton and Kyle Markham know that feeling on a different level. For a few years the couple, their son (Reef), and their husky (Aura) lived in an 84-square-foot Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. At the time, it fit their lifestyle perfectly, although they had always dreamed of one day owning a tiny home. That dream would become a sudden reality.

“When I found out I was pregnant with our second, we all of a sudden had a nine-month timeline to figure out where home was,” Maddison says. “We only had three seats in the van, so it was time for a change. We didn’t feel ready to commit to one place and weren’t in a position to buy, so building a tiny home felt like the natural next step. It meant we could own our own home, yet still have the flexibility of not committing to purchasing land.”

So, in 2024 they put roots down in South Australia. Luckily they didn’t have to spend too much time dreaming of what their new home would look like, as Maddison had been cultivating a tiny home-themed board on Pinterest for 10 years. Kyle’s brother, Jake, from JAM Built, would be tasked with constructing the home. (Maddison mentions that he’s the best builder they know.)

Maddison had a few non-negotiables for the tiny home. For example, she says that because she’s “really sensitive and [has] a lot of allergies,” she wanted to ensure that the construction had limited chemicals. “We used low- or no-VOC products where possible,” she says. “From the paint on the walls, our bedding, sealants, and natural, blue-light-free lighting.”

The couple only had nine months to build the home, and the tight timeline was somewhat of a design challenge. However, in the end, it all worked out. They welcomed their newest baby, Vallee, into the family two months before moving in and have lived there for six months now.

Having two bedrooms and a few hundred extra square feet likely benefits the family, but they’re used to living comfortably in close quarters. In less than a year, what was once a trailer became the most whimsical, gorgeous family tiny home.
