Alex’s Cottage Kitchen Makeover

My girlfriend and I recently purchased a 1885 brick cottage in the German Village neighborhood of Columbus, OH. While the house had great bones and needed nothing major, it was very outdated and needed a lot of cosmetic work. We renovated the entire first floor, including drywalling all of the walls and ceilings, refinishing the original old growth pine floors, and redoing the entire kitchen and layout.

It was about a two and a half month long project but we’re extremely proud of the outcome. We were able to stay on budget, about $20,000, for the entire first floor. Fortunately my dad and I were able to do much of the work ourselves, and for the work we couldn’t he had friends that were able to (plumber, electrician, drywall).

In terms of the kitchen, we put in new white oak floors, IKEA cabinetry, white oak butcher block countertops, plank ceilings, and new appliances. We think the transformation was pretty great, considering we did the kitchen (including appliances) for about $13,000.
