An Artist’s 450-Square-Foot Studio Is a Colorful Playhouse
“Before I moved in, the studio was industrial and open with wood floors and was a small open space,” begins artist and creator Alliannah Hamilton. “It was clean and neutral with a big window in the middle of the room. It had white walls, white painted exposed brick, with navy blue painted wood accents and door trims.”

But before Alliannah moved into this 450-square-foot apartment in Shockoe Bottom in Richmond, Virginia, a year and a half ago, she was nervous that the space was too small. But once she began to invision the layout, she knew it was the place for her.
“I needed my space to feel peaceful and also have a spot for me to do all the things that I am into such as art, digital media, resting, and play,” she continues. “I’ve always dreamed of my homes being playhouses, so this one wasn’t anything different besides doing it at a minimal level and making sure any decor I had was also functional.”
Today, the brick studio, built sometime in the 1880s to 1920s, feels like a cozy sanctuary for Alliannah. “I wanted to go for a modern, organic vibe, but accent everything with pops of color and items/decor that was fun, playful and functional,” she writes.
“My identity is reflected in my home in all the ways. My accessories, my art, the cozy and calm vibes but intricate in the small details, and my desire to play and be free.”
