Shopping for a new mattress is daunting — and important. After all, the right mattress will help you get a good night’s sleep, while the wrong mattress can lead to irritating aches and pains. There’s a lot to consider when mattress shopping, from the firmness and feel to the type and brand you prefer. The choice is even harder to make if you can’t try out your top choices in person first, even if the return policy is good.

To help make the shopping experience a little easier, we visited the New York City storefront of one of our favorite mattress brands: Avocado. As part of our Personal Shopper series, we checked out four of Avocado’s most popular mattresses, and spent time testing each one to see how they stacked up against each other. While we didn’t get to see every Avocado mattress (the brand sells four others), the ones we did cover are the four bestsellers — and we tested a few different variations of each.

Why Avocado?

Avocado was founded in 2015 with the goal of manufacturing more eco-friendly mattresses, and it’s certainly achieved that goal. All of its mattresses are made from sustainably sourced, high-quality materials that have an impressive number of certifications, including GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), Made Safe, and Greenguard. Instead of using memory foam and polyester, Avocado’s mattresses are made from GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certified latex and Responsible Wool Standard certified wool, among other materials. In addition, Avocado doesn’t use flame retardants or PFAs, and is Climate Neutral certified.

Aside from all that good stuff, Avocado’s mattresses are simply great. They’re more expensive than typical memory foam mattresses, but they’re made from better materials and offer plenty of support and comfort. Many Apartment Therapy editors are fans, and we’ve written about our love for Avocado mattresses, mattress pads, and mattress toppers. Plus, Avocado has more recently branched out into furniture — you can read about our bed frame-focused Personal Shopper trip here.

The Criteria

We judged every Avocado mattress based on the following criteria:

  • Feel: Is the mattress firm, soft, or somewhere in between? Does it have extra cushioning? Is it comfortable no matter the sleep position?
  • Support: Does the mattress effectively cradle pressure points? Does it feel comfortable to lie on?
  • Materials: What is the mattress made from? Is it a hybrid mattress? Does it have cooling properties?
  • Safety: Do the materials in the mattress have any certifications?

Every Editor-Tested Mattress at Avocado

Most Affordable: Eco Organic Mattress

What we love

  • Suitable for all sleeper types
  • Supportive

Good to know

  • Only available in one firmness level

Lizzy’s thoughts: The Eco Organic is the most affordable mattress at Avocado, but the high-quality, organic certified materials (like latex, wool, and cotton) make it seem much more expensive. Unlike the other mattress options, this one doesn’t have different firmness levels to choose from — instead, it has a uniform medium feel that is supportive and leans more firm than soft. As someone who sleeps in all positions (back, side, stomach), I approve!

When I sat on the edge of the bed, I noticed that it has a little more edge support than the Avocado Green, although it’s not too obvious. Also similar to the Avocado Green is the lack of motion transfer control — I could feel Sarah move on the other side as we both laid on it. Again, it wasn’t too noticeable, but still something to consider if you’re a light sleeper. It’s also the shortest of the mattresses at 10 inches tall, although that’s still average height (Avocado loves a tall bed!).

Overall, I love that the Eco Organic offers an affordable entry point to Avocado. It’s made of really impressive materials, and the feel is versatile enough for all types of sleepers. Although it doesn’t come with an optional pillow top like the other mattresses do, you could always add on a topper of your own for a plusher feel (Avocado sells a few).

Best for Combination Sleepers: Green Mattress, Medium Feel

What we love

  • Suitable for all sleeper types
  • Tall height

Good to know

  • Motion transfer could be better

Lizzy’s thoughts: The Avocado Green is actually the mattress I have at home, so believe me when I say that it’s worth the price tag. I have the medium pillow top, which is also what was displayed in the store, and I would definitely describe it as having a medium feel. I prefer a firm mattress, so I actually think the feel is a little soft, although Sarah said that she thinks the feel is more on the firmer side. If you share a bed with a partner and you can’t agree on the right firmness level, then I think this mattress will make you both happy!

While there is some sinking when you lie down, the mattress curves around your body, making you feel supported. It also has some bounce to it, which I like a lot. I’m not a memory foam person because I don’t like sinking too deep into the bed, but I also didn’t like the lack of give in my last mattress, which was a classic spring bed. The Avocado Green is a perfect compromise, and I think it’s truly so comfortable.

My only complaint is that I think the edge support and motion transfer could be better. I share the bed with my husband and dog, and I definitely feel it when one of them moves. Otherwise, I love the tall height and quality of the materials, and highly recommend it to anyone looking for an upgrade!

Best Plush: Luxury Organic Mattress

What we love

  • “Ultra plush” feel
  • Great motion transfer control

Good to know

  • Very expensive, especially if you get a pillow-top

Sarah’s thoughts: I tested two different versions of the Luxury Organic mattress, starting with the standard style. It doesn’t have a pillow-top, so it’s similar to the Eco Organic, which also has a medium feel. Unlike the Eco Organic, though, the standard Luxury Organic has better edge support and motion transfer control, as well as greater height. This version is definitely better for those who like a firmer feel — I didn’t melt into it when lying down, but I still found it comfortable and certainly not hard.

If you do like a plusher feel, you can opt for the pillow-top version (which has a plush feel) or the box-top version (which has an ultra plush feel). I tested the latter, which is designed for side sleepers and those looking for serious pressure relief. I sank right in! I have a lot of back and neck pain, and I felt better just from lying on it for a few minutes. Plus, the motion transfer control was incredible, and I couldn’t feel Lizzy at all when she moved on the other side.

I also really love how Avocado mattresses look, with the quilted sides, handles, and soft outer layer. You can tell immediately that this is a high-quality mattress, even before you learn what’s inside (the Luxury Organic has all the materials of the less expensive mattresses, plus alpaca wool and silk). It’s super expensive though, especially if you decide to get one of the pillow-top versions, but worth it if you’re looking for a bed that’s extremely soft and plush.

  • Height: 13.25, 14, or 15 inches
  • Firmness: Medium, plush, or ultra plush

Most Luxe: Grand Luxe Mattress

What we love

  • Variety of firmness options
  • Truly luxurious feel and high quality design

Good to know

  • Extremely expensive

Lizzy’s thoughts: Avocado’s most versatile mattress is also its most luxurious, but that’s not surprising considering the “Grand Luxe” name. It’s available in a variety of firmness levels based on the model — in addition to the classic version that has no extra padding, you have the option of adding on one of two different pillow-tops (either attached or detached). I tested both the classic version and the pillow-top.

The classic is very bouncy and quite firm, with no sink. It’s definitely supportive, and had the most motion transfer control and edge support out of all the mattresses we saw. Personally though, I prefer the pillow-top option because it combined support with a softer, plush feel. The cool thing about this mattress is that the pillow-top doesn’t come in just one feel, but three. I tested the medium pillow-top, which felt truly luxurious — I can only imagine how comfy the medium plush and ultra plush versions feel.

While none of the Avocado mattresses are “cooling” in the sense that they are made with cooling technology, the materials used to make them are naturally breathable. The Grand Luxe felt the coolest to me due to the linen-like exterior, especially compared with the softer wool of the other mattresses. And again, the materials inside are highly breathable — latex is more cooling than memory foam, and wool is naturally temperature-regulating.

Of course, this is the most expensive Avocado mattress by far. It’s on par with the true luxury mattress brands, with queen prices starting at nearly $5,500 and maxing out at $19,999, depending on the model. While it’s definitely the best option Avocado sells (I found it to be truly outstanding), I think you could be just as happy with one of the less expensive models. This is especially true when you consider that the materials amongst the three mattresses are similar — the only material that’s exclusive to the Grand Luxe is mohair.
