I try to be so careful to avoid staining my clothes. The moment I feel the telltale plop of food or a splatter from a pan, I rush to check the damage. There’s nothing worse than realizing your favorite top now has a mark that definitely wasn’t there when you bought it.

Thankfully, I’ve relied on the same stain-removal hack for as long as I can remember — one I learned by watching my mom work her quiet cleaning magic. Whenever a blouse or sweater suffers a stain that feels truly threatening, I don’t panic or experiment. I reach for the same solution she always did: baby shampoo.

My Mom’s Baby Shampoo Stain Removal Hack

My mom’s stain-removal hack is surprisingly simple: She uses Johnson’s Baby Shampoo to lift stains from clothing. No specialty stain remover, no harsh chemicals — just a generous dab of shampoo applied directly to the fabric, followed by cold water.

When I was growing up, shampoo options were limited, and Johnson’s Baby Shampoo was a household staple. It lathered well, smelled clean, and was gentle enough to use every day. At some point, my mom realized that same gentleness made it effective on clothes, too. She believed in the product so completely that I never questioned it — and eventually, I adopted the same habit in my own home.

How to Remove Stains Using Baby Shampoo

This is the exact method my mom has used for decades, and the one I still rely on today:

  1. Apply a generous amount of baby shampoo directly onto the stain.
  2. Gently rub the shampoo into the fabric.
  3. Rinse the stained area under cold running water.
  4. Soak the garment in a bowl of cold water for 30 minutes.
  5. Rinse thoroughly with cold water.
  6. Reapply shampoo if needed.
  7. Repeat steps 4 and 5.
  8. Lay flat to air-dry.

What Happened When I Tried This Stain-Removal Hack

To confirm that this method still works as well as I remembered, I decided to put it to the test on a sweater from my closet. I debated which stain would truly challenge the method — coffee, oil, chocolate — but ultimately chose one of the toughest: blueberries. I crushed the fruit directly into the fabric and followed my mom’s steps exactly.

The result? The stain disappeared completely. The sweater is currently laid flat on a towel, drying and ready to wear again. Thanks, Mom, for providing a way for me to continue channeling your expertise.
