Before & After: Accent Wall Goes from Yawn to Yarn
Inspired by string art, Ryan took this blank wall in his loft and transformed it into what looks like a wireframed wood of birch trees:

Living in an apartment means one major thing: You MUST be creative in your endeavors to make the place feel like home. Though I’m allowed to paint the walls, I am not allowed to apply any kind of stencils (which I love). I thought of the abstract birch trees after I saw yarn art displayed in a friend’s apartment. It was a small 12″x12″ piece of wood with nails in the shape of our home state, Ohio. The yarn had been woven around each nail and stretched across the wood to a nail on the opposite side, nearly filling in the Ohio shape and creating a design I really liked.A quick look on the internet showed my friend’s cute little Ohio-shaped project was all over Pinterest. I wanted to take mine to the next level and create something that was fresh, beautiful, and had never been done before. I decided on a color for the wall, purchased 350 clear thumb tacks from a local store, and one large ball of white cotton yarn. Total price? $23 (including paint). The labor was incredibly easy and fun, and took 5 hours on a rainy Saturday afternoon. The tall birch trees add height and depth to the wall. I absolutely love how they turned out and can’t wait to start my next yarn project.
