You shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but a bed? Now that’s fair game. As an essential layer on your bedscape, bed blankets can make a major impact on the quality of sleep you get, not to mention the overall look and feel of your space. And because they’re available in a seemingly infinite combination of fabrics, styles, and thicknesses, finding the best bed blanket can seem a bit daunting and difficult if you don’t know what you’re looking for.

You’ve seen our lists of the Best Sheets, Best Mattresses, and Best Pillows; now it’s time to talk about the best blankets that you can buy for your bed. To help you figure out where to spend your hard-earned dollars, we spent weeks (and in some cases, months) sleeping under bed blankets of all sorts, layering them up with our comforters and even using them on their own.

The options on the list below are all absolute winners that stood out in every category, from cooling to muslin to all-season. Keep reading to learn how to find the blanket of your dreams and see our editor-favorite picks, which come from Parachute, Brooklinen, and more.

Quick Overview

The Best Bed Blanket Overall: Sunday Citizen Snug Bed Blanket

Apartment Therapy editors were already fans of Sunday Citizen’s Snug duvet cover and cooling comforter, so it comes as no surprise that the Snug Bed Blanket tops off our list this year. It’s made from the brand’s signature fabric blend, which is fluffy and cloud-like and just light enough for layering. Its stunning texture adds to its appeal, too.

What to Consider When Shopping for Bed Blankets

Your sleep patterns and lifestyle are big factors in choosing the right bed blanket for you. Are you a hot sleeper or do you get chilly in the middle of the night? Do you love snuggling up under heavy covers or do you prefer something light and breathable? Do you have a pet that has been known to destroy your nice things? Will very specific washing instructions stress you out? All of these variables will help drive your decision.

Functionality

You can search for an option that addresses your specific needs when it comes to weight, size, material, style, and more. To identify special features of a blanket you’re considering, keep an eye out for terms like “breathable,” “thermoregulating,” “oversized,” “weighted,” and “reversible.”

Aesthetics

There are too many options out there to settle for a bed blanket that you don’t absolutely love. Think about the material you like, the colors available, and the way a rambunctious pet might mess it up. You want your pick to look just as fantastic (or close to it) on day 1,000 as it did on day one.

Certifications

Bedding essentials and other home textiles are subject to certifications that let consumers know about the materials and processes used in making them. Here is a list of the usual suspects to look out for.

  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified: Products are free of harmful synthetics and dyes.
  • Made in Green by OEKO-TEX certified: Materials used in products are traceable and have been tested for and are free from harmful substances.
  • GOTS certified: Products align with the Global Organic Textile Standard, which defines the worldwide recognized requirements for organic textiles.
  • Cotton LEADS program: A reliable cotton supply chain providing raw material that is responsibly produced and identified.
  • Made Safe certified: Products are nontoxic and made with safe ingredients/materials.
  • Fair Trade certified: Products are created in alignment with the economic standards in place for manufacturers to equitably distribute the benefits of ingredient, material, or product trade.
  • Global Cotton Initiative partner: The production process uses fewer synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, increases cotton yields, reduces water usage, improves soil health, and applies decent work principles.

What We Look For in a Bed Blanket

We tested a wide range of bed blankets and judged them on the following criteria:

  • Performance: Does the blanket live up to its promises? Are the size, color, and texture what we were expecting? How does it hold up after washing?
  • Quality: What materials is it made from? What certifications does it have? Is it from a brand you know and trust?
  • Value: Does the price reflect the quality you’re getting? How does the price compare to similar options?

The Best Bed Blankets

The Best Overall Blanket

A larger version of the brand’s best-selling Snug Throw, Sunday Citizen’s Snug Bed Blanket has every quality you could ever dream of in a bed blanket: It’s suitable for every season, has a medium weight that’s ideal for layering, and looks beautiful on top of the rest of your bedding.

Senior Shopping Editor Britt Franklin was already a fan of the brand’s Snug comforter and found the blanket version to be a perfect, more-lightweight complement. (And she runs hot while she sleeps!) It features the same microfiber blend, designed to be impressively fluffy and breathable at the same time. It’s also gentle on your skin because the materials are all hypoallergenic.

“Dare I say the blanket is even softer than the comforters?” Britt says. “It’s super cozy and has a gorgeous texture. I’ve been using it as an extra bedding layer during the transitional months and it’s just the right weight, not too heavy or too light so I get added warmth when I need it and I don’t overheat, either.”

What we love

  • Extremely soft
  • Lightweight microfiber blend is suitable for all seasons
  • Breathable and hypoallergenic
  • Ideal for layering
  • Comes in a range of neutrals

Good to know

  • Microfiber is made of synthetic materials

Who It’s Best For: People who want maximum fluffiness and softness without the density; people who want a blanket that never has to leave their bed, regardless of the season.

Specifications:

  • Material: 100% microfiber
  • Colors: 7 options
  • Sizes: Twin/full, queen, king
  • Certifications: OEKO-TEX Standard 100-certified

The Best Budget-Friendly Blanket

Bedsure’s high-quality, low-cost bedding constantly impresses Apartment Therapy editors. In fact, it’s earned spots on our Best List time and time again, from its comforter to its cooling pillow, so it comes as no surprise to me that its fleece blanket ranked highly during our testing.

If you’re a cold sleeper or looking for a layer for those chilly fall and winter nights, then this is the blanket for you. The fleece material is thick, and according to the brand, 60% more dense and 40% longer than the market average. Another pro is that the fibers are antistatic.

Because it’s “thick, soft, and cozy,” former Commerce SEO Editor Sarah Vazquez gave it a perfect rating in most of our testing categories, including texture and quality. “It is pretty weighty so I wouldn’t say this is good for any time of the year except fall and winter, but if you want something that’ll keep you bundled up through even the coldest nights (and that won’t break the bank), this one is hard to beat,” she says.

What we love

  • Thick fleece is 60% more dense that most blankets
  • Blanket is extra long
  • Fibers are antistatic

Good to know

  • Best suited for cooler weather; not as ideal for warmer seasons

Who It’s Best For: People who run cold while sleeping; those who live in cool climates; people who want a blanket that’ll make their bed warmer without breaking the bank.

Specifications:

  • Material: 100% polyester
  • Colors: 4 options
  • Sizes: Twin/twin XL, full/queen, king
  • Certifications: OEKO-TEX Standard 100-certified

*Honorable Mention: If you love a budget-friendly find that looks (and performs) better than its price suggests, Walmart’s Better Homes & Gardens knit bed blanket is worth checking out. The Kitchn’s Senior Lifestyle Editor and Apartment Therapy’s Staff Writer Quinn Fish says it’s a “super cozy” addition to her bedscape. “This spring and summer, I’m using it as my only bedding because it’s soft, light, and breathable (and I’m a hot sleeper),” she explains. “It does shed a bit, and it’s so big, it’s pretty bulky to store, but if you have storage space, it’s not a problem.”

The Best Luxury Blanket

As someone who swears by buttery-soft bedding, former Shopping Writer Morgan Pryor used to think she wouldn’t be a fan of linen — but then she took a chance on some linen sheets and her stance changed completely. Because of its breathability, she thought a bed blanket made of linen would work well under her heavy comforter. Spoiler alert: She was right!

Parachute’s Vintage Linen Bed Blanket is a denser version of the fabric than she’s used to, but it’s also far less weighty and insulating than fleece or cotton. It also has a stunning vintage look and comes in some gorgeous colors, and depending on how you style it, it can give your bed a laid-back, boho vibe or a put-together, minimalist one.

“I couldn’t ask for a more perfect barrier between my sheets and my comforter,” says Morgan. “It may be pricey, but I know I’ll hold onto this bed blanket forever. It’s gone through the wash a few times and has shown zero signs of wear, and I can tell the material — which is also soft from the get-go — is substantial. It’s also versatile enough for year-round use.”

What we love

  • Made of 100% natural fibers (flax)
  • Ideal for layering
  • Vintage look is versatile; works for boho and minimalist decor
  • Good for both hot and cold sleepers

Good to know

  • Pricey (though fans say it's worth the investment!)
  • Linen requires slightly special care: Wash in lukewarm water separately or with like colors, on the gentle cycle, with mild laundry soap

Who It’s Best For: People who want to invest in a bed blanket that works for every season; people who run hot while they sleep or have a heavier comforter.

Specifications:

  • Material: 100% European flax
  • Colors: 5 options
  • Sizes: Full/queen, King/Cal King
  • Certifications: OEKO-TEX Standard 100-certified

The Best Blanket for Layering

You could layer nearly any blanket on this list, but the pick that’s most ideal for this purpose is The Company Store’s LaCrosse Down Alternative Blanket. It offers ample warmth without being too bulky (aka perfect qualities for a layering blanket), and it’s made with the brand’s exclusive LoftAIRE Down Alternative fill and a box construction that keeps the stuffing evenly distributed.

While the 295-thread-count cotton twill shell is smooth to the touch, former Senior Style Editor Blair Donovan actually uses her blanket as a duvet insert. “I kind of DIY’ed my own corner ties and made it work inside of a linen duvet cover.”

Blair reports that this choice is soft and lightweight yet thick enough to be a primary year-round layer. If you don’t usually sleep with more than one layer when it’s warm out, this blanket is thin enough to fold and keep at the foot of the bed for daytime naps or for nights when the temperature dips.

Read our full review of The Company Store LaCrosse Blanket.

What we love

  • Comes in 11 colors
  • Hypoallergenic down alternative fill (also available in a down option)
  • Box construction keeps fill evenly distributed
  • 295-thread-count cotton twill shell
  • Lightweight enough to serve as a year-round layer

Good to know

  • Lacks corner ties for those who want to keep it inside a duvet cover

Who It’s Best For: Sleepers who like to layer their bedding in the colder months; people who want a little extra fluff in their bed blanket.

Specifications:

  • Material: 100% cotton shell, down alternative fill
  • Colors: 11 options
  • Sizes: Twin/twin XL, full/queen, king/Cal king
  • Certifications: OEKO-TEX Standard 100-certified

*Honorable Mention: Crate and Barrel’s Oversized Bed Throw Blanket won over former Commerce SEO Writer Haley Lyndes. Like its name suggests, it’s technically a knit throw blanket, but its dimensions are 80×80 inches. (For reference, a full mattress measures 54×75 inches and a queen is 80×60 inches.) It’s thin enough for layering and folding up for compact storage.

The Best Organic Blanket

As described by former Executive Commerce Director Mark Marino, Boll & Branch’s Lightweight Bed Blanket “proved to be a champion.” Sporting a subtle basketweave, this airy bed blanket is breathable, ultrasoft, and ideal for pairing with the rest of your bedding. It’s made with 100% long-staple organic cotton that contributes to its smooth feel and durability.

Surprisingly, the blanket also has a light sheen that takes it from purely functional to stylish. Thanks to its oversized fit, the blanket can also accommodate multiple mattress sizes. While the price tag for this Boll & Branch winner is notably high, we consider it worth the splurge as it’s long-lasting, versatile, and timeless.

“Because it’s so lightweight and breathable, I never broke a sweat as I slept,” says Mark, who’s used the blanket in 80-degree weather as well as the chillier months. “On the cooler nights, I added a comforter to the mix, and I swear I’ve never felt cozier. I didn’t overheat, and I actually found that I was sleeping better and stopped waking up several times in the middle of the night — which is unheard of for me.”

What we love

  • Made with 100% long-staple organic cotton
  • Basketweave makes the blanket extra soft and breathable, ideal for all seasons
  • Oversized fit works with a variety of mattress sizes

Good to know

  • A bit pricey (but worth the investment!)
  • Special care recommended: Cold wash with like colors on gentle cycle, tumble dry on low

Who It’s Best For: People who want a lightweight blanket that’s organic, great for layering, and sumptuously soft.

Specifications:

  • Material: 100% cotton
  • Colors: 5 options
  • Sizes: Twin/twin XL, full/queen, king/Cal king
  • Certifications: OEKO-TEX Standard 100- and GOTS-certified

The Best Muslin Blanket

Muslin cotton is made to regulate your body temperature, keeping you cool when you get hot and vice versa — which is why this soft, gauzy fabric warrants its own category on our list. Our favorite? The 365 Blanket from Muslin Comfort. As its name suggests, this versatile, durable blanket can be enjoyed year-round as a bed blanket, throw blanket, or even for outdoor picnics and beach days. Note: the queen size is currently out of stock, but you can grab it in an oversized king!

“I love a good blanket that I can take anywhere without thinking twice about whether or not it should leave the bed,” says Britt. It’s prewashed and preshrunk, and because it’s meant to be oversized, you can say goodbye to fighting with your partner for the covers.

The 365 Blanket is hypoallergenic, lightweight yet substantial, and refreshingly breathable. On top of my bedding, it adds a comforting pressure that has given me deeper, more restful sleep without any unpleasant night sweats, and as an everyday blanket, it’s fun to bundle up like a burrito and relax for an afternoon on the couch. Cue the binge-watching marathon.

What we love

  • 100% muslin cotton is ideal for year-round layering
  • Oversized and preshrunk to fit a range of mattress sizes
  • Super soft, hypoallergenic, and breathable
  • Comes in a range of on-trend colors (not just neutrals)
  • Also available in an organic option

Who It’s Best For: People who sleep hot or have night sweats — or who sleep next to someone who does.

Specifications:

  • Material: Premium muslin cotton
  • Colors: 6 options
  • Sizes: Twin, full, queen, king/Cal king
  • Certifications: OEKO-TEX Standard 100- and Fair Trade-certified

The Best Blanket for All Seasons

Anyone that’s short on space knows the importance of all-season bedding. If you don’t want to strip your bedding when the temperature rises, then Assistant Shopping Manager Mila Hoang highly recommends Brooklinen’s Dreamweave Waffle Bed Blanket. According to her, there’s a high likelihood that you won’t feel the need to kick it off in the middle of the night.

It’s thermoregulating — meaning that it keeps you warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s hot. You can use it on its own if you run hot, but Mila’s been draping it over her duvet this winter and spring, loving the classic waffle texture and pretty moss color. Made entirely of Turkish cotton, it delivers a comforting feel, too, that you’ll want to snuggle up with all night long.

“I was genuinely impressed by how soft it is!” Mila says. “Unlike many of my other blankets, it’s not too thick, which makes it easy to fold and store without any bulk. It’s also much larger than I expected — definitely big enough to fully cover a bed.”

What we love

  • Turkish cotton is thermoregulating
  • Super soft, substantive but not too thick
  • Waffle weave gives an airy texture

Good to know

  • A bit pricey (but worth the investment!)

Who It’s Best For: People who live in small spaces or are short on storage; people who prefer versatile cotton bedding.

Specifications:

  • Material: 100% Turkish cotton
  • Colors: 16 options
  • Sizes: Twin/twin XL, full/queen, king/Cal king
  • Certifications: N/A

The Best Blanket for Cooling

Sometimes a comforter is just too much during the warmer months, and a bed blanket is all you need. If you want a blanket that has some extra oomph in the cooling department, then Coop’s Comphy Coolspa Blanket is guaranteed to do the trick. Morgan replaced her too-heavy comforter with this pick during a stuffy summer last year, and she fell in love with the silky-smooth exterior that’s always cool to the touch, just as its name suggests.

It’s made of the brand’s exclusive nylon and spandex blend, and the fill’s blend is cooling too. Backed up by third party lab testing, the brand’s CoolSpa bedding “disperses more heat than bamboo, silk, or other popular synthetics.” If that isn’t enough endorsement: Morgan’s mom immediately bought one of these blankets for herself after she stayed over at her apartment for a few days.

“I thought I would find myself missing the fluffiness [of a comforter] — the CoolSpa blanket is on the thinner side — but it’s still just thick enough to bundle up in,” her review says. “The fill is evenly distributed throughout due to the quilted stitching, which also gives it a classic, minimalist look.”

Read our full review of the Coop Comphy CoolSpa Blanket.

What we love

  • Nylon and spandex exterior disperses body heat
  • Silky smooth texture
  • Box stitching keeps polyester and nylon blend fill evenly distributed
  • Easy care: Quick drying and wrinkle-free

Good to know

  • Made with synthetic materials

Who It’s Best For: People who run warm while sleeping; people whose apartments get hot in the summer.

Specifications:

  • Material: Nylon/spandex blend CoolPhiber fabric; polyester and nylon blend fill
  • Colors: 3 options
  • Sizes: Throw, full/queen, king/Cal king
  • Certifications: OEKO-TEX Standard 100-certified

Best Blanket for Cold Weather

Sometimes a comforter isn’t enough to block out the winter chill, and layering is the key to sleeping through the night without shivering. The second you put Cozy Earth’s Cuddle Blanket in place, its ultra-plush faux fur material will dial up your bed’s coziness to a 10. Technically, this blanket is a throw, but if you select the oversized version, it’ll easily fit a Queen mattress, according to Britt. It also has a substantial weight to it for even more comfort.

Britt has owned it for well over a year and has had no complaints. It still remains as soft and picture-perfect as the day she opened it out of its packaging. That makes it worth the splurge!

“There hasn’t been any sudden bunching or appearance of loose hems, but what has impressed me the most is that this blanket doesn’t shed,” she says. “It keeps me substantially warm, which means I don’t have to crank up the heat (saving me money in the long run), and it’s honestly replaced some of my weighted throw blankets that didn’t fully cover my mattress from edge to edge.”

Read our full review of the Cozy Earth Cuddle Blanket.

What we love

  • Faux fur material is incredibly cozy and feels luxe
  • Doesn't shed
  • Oversized to fit a range of mattresses

Good to know

  • To make the quality last, Cozy Earth recommends dry cleaning

Who It’s Best For: People who enjoy the feel of weighted blankets and faux fur; people who want a substantial layer of comfort and warmth.

Specifications:

  • Material: 100% polyester faux fur
  • Colors: 3 options
  • Sizes: Throw, oversized throw
  • Certifications: N/A

*Honorable Mention: Last year’s winner of this category, the Barefoot Dreams CozyChic Ribbed Bed Blanket, remains highly recommended by our editors. “It’s so thick and soft and just a little bit spongy, kind of like a fuzzy sock for your whole body,” says former Home Projects Editor Sarah Everett, who uses this blanket as an additional layer when temperatures drop.

The Best Oversized Blanket

If you and your partner are always arguing about who stole the covers first, then this is the blanket for you. Britt always wanted to try a Big Blanket, but she was worried that it would overwhelm her not-exactly-large space. If you’ve had the same concern, you can stop worrying.

Although this 10×10-foot blanket is bigger than a traditional king, it’s perfectly oversized and actually makes an excellent extra bed layer since it hides her bed frame better than other covers. It’s quite easy on the eyes, too. Britt says the pictures don’t do it justice — this blanket is gorgeous.

The Big Blanket is manufactured with a four-way stretch that gives it a sophisticated look, a smooth feel, and a slight sheen. And while it is jumbo, it’s not too cumbersome for your linen closet — although you might not even need to store it. While the Big Blanket has been a great addition to Britt’s bedroom during the winter, she actually keeps it out year-round!

Read our full review of The Big Blanket.

What we love

  • At 10x10 feet, it's extra, extra large
  • Four-way stretch
  • Temperature regulating, moisture wicking
  • Lots of fun colors and prints
  • Even though it's huge, it will still fit in a standard washer

Good to know

  • Made with synthetic materials

Who It’s Best For: Partners who steal the covers from each other.

Specifications:

  • Material: 93% polyester, 7% spandex
  • Colors: 27 options
  • Sizes: 8’x8′, 10’x10′
  • Certifications: OEKO-TEX Standard 100-certified

How We Test Products

The Shopping Team at Apartment Therapy Media has one mission: to help you make smart and informed purchases. We know how hard online shopping can be — it’s literally our job! From trying to decipher confusing marketing lingo to sorting through scores of fake paid reviews in search of some truth, online shopping can be overwhelming. We’re dedicated to doing the hard work for you by reviewing these products firsthand and delivering all the information you need, both good and bad.

Our team is made up of a group of writers and editors who have years of experience in the home, kitchen, and parenting consumer product space, and who are always testing for new tried-and-true staples. Consider us your trusted source on everything home, whether it’s what to consider before buying a sofa or a mattress, the best places to shop for affordable rugs, or which cookware pieces are really worth the cabinet space.

Why You Should Trust Us as Product Testers

As experts in the home and design space, we put products to the test right where they matter: at home. Whether it’s the gadget on everyone’s wish list or the coolest-looking design finds, we bring these products into our personal spaces and test them for weeks and even months at a time to see how well they live up to their claims. Do those sheets still feel silky smooth after a couple of washes? Does that mattress remain firm or soften up too soon? Are those bath towels really quick drying or do they need an extra spin in the machine? We’ll let you know.

Within each of our reviews, we also break down the different ways that we critique products. In some cases, we’re testing products head-to-head on things like price, ease of use, and durability. In others, we’re comparing new products to personal favorites or ones we’ve tested in the past. No matter what, we’ll always break down the ins and outs of a product. At the end of the day, we’re consumers too, so we’ll provide you with all the information we’d want — and then some.
