I love daybeds. Even though I don’t have the space in my tiny New York City apartment for a daybed, I have dreams of someday having one of my own. There’s just something kind of romantic about them — you can curl up and take a catnap, or you can lounge lazily when you have pals come over.

They’re a highly versatile piece of furniture, too. If you don’t have the room for a traditional guest bed, this works just as well and you can use it even when you don’t have overnight guests. Multitasking, space-saving, and stylish? Count me in!

The Best Daybeds

You can think of a daybed as the child of a bed, sofa, and futon. Usually, daybeds are about the size of a twin-size bed — perfect for a kids’ room, as a place for overnight guests, or just a spot to curl up and read or watch TV.

You’ll also find that they’re typically sold without a cushion, which is something to keep in mind when considering your budget. In some ways it’s nice that they don’t usually come with one, so you can choose one that fits your style — there are tufted, patterned, velvet options, and more. You can also get a twin-sized mattress for extra comfort; just put a bottom sheet on it, then tuck in a decorative blanket or quilt to cover up the sheet.

Ready for a nap? Here are some of the best daybeds for all the lounging around.

Tessu Daybed
$899

Available in three neutral shades, the Tessu Daybed adds subtle elegance to your space while providing a cozy place to rest and relax. It features a kid-friendly frame that's padded with foam and is wrapped in a low-absorption fabric that prevents stains from setting in too quickly for you to clean them up. The daybed comes with wooden slats and solid wood legs, and an 8" to 12" Twin mattress is recommended.

IKEA HEMNES Daybed
$399

At the right price, this IKEA daybed is hardly boring. We’re fans of the (limited!) gray-green color, which is accented by the gold handles on the storage drawers. Plus, those drawers are roomy enough to fit extra linens, a duvet, and even pillows. Treat this as a sofa during the day and expand it into a cozy double bed at night.
