Here’s one lesson I learned the hard way: Invest in appropriate storage for your holiday decor. I used to shove my decorations (ornaments, twinkle lights, garland, etc.) haphazardly wherever they fit in my small apartment. But when it came time to set them up the following year, I either couldn’t find what I was looking for, found them covered in dust, or, worse, damaged beyond repair — which led me to spend more money in the long run.

That’s why I’ll be righting my wrongs by investing in storage solutions for all my seasonal decor this year. And if you want to better protect fragile Christmas tree ornaments, keep your gift wrapping supplies tidy, and get the most festive cheer out of the decorations you already own, I suggest you do the same. Here’s everything you need.

How to Store Ornaments

Because ornaments come in all shapes and sizes, you’ll want to look for modular storage pieces that can be adjusted to fit all the pieces in your collection (think: containers with adjustable dividers, or bins with stackable trays that you can add or remove as needed).

Handy Laundry Christmas Ornament Storage Box
$16

This space-saving storage bin features stackable trays with adjustable dividers that can accommodate ornaments of different sizes. It’s available with a lidded or zip top, and has a card slot for easy labeling. It’s pretty compact, too, at 13 inches tall by 13 inches wide, so it’s perfect for storing at the top of your closet.

How to Store Christmas and Seasonal Wreaths

One thing you don’t want to do is try and squeeze your wreath in a square box. It’ll lose its shape and you’ll risk damaging any of the delicate baubles on top. Instead, go for a round storage bag sized right for your wreath. Bonus points for ones made of a resilient, moisture-proof material!

Small 24" Holiday Wreath Storage Bag
$50

If you splurged on a fancy holiday wreath, you might as well invest in a storage bag to protect your investment. This one from Crate & Barrel is made of a heavy-duty, water- and abrasion-resistant fabric and features hard-shell walls for added protection. And when it’s not holding your wreath, the bag collapses for easy storage.

This two-pack of wreath bags takes the guesswork out of decorating with a clear window at the front, which allows you to find your wreath in seconds. How to Store Christmas Trees

There are a couple of things worth considering when shopping for Christmas tree storage. Think about where you typically store your tree and how much space you have. Depending on your limitations, the right tree storage may require disassembly. You may also want a bag with wheels for easy maneuvering if you store your tree in a separate location, like a storage unit or basement.

Primode Rolling Tree Storage Bag
$45

Artificial Christmas trees are expensive, so you’d be wise to protect your investment with a heavy-duty storage bag. This bag-on-wheels can hold a disassembled tree up to nine feet tall and is made of a resilient tear-proof material that’ll keep pests and dust away. Plus, it’s collapsible for seamless storage while it’s not in use!

Large Upright Christmas Tree TreeKeeper
$120

It doesn’t get any more fuss-free than the TreeKeeper. It’s a rolling, upright tree storage bag that zips up around your trees up to 7.5 feet tall — no disassembly required. The bag sits at the base of your artificial tree and is easily concealed by a tree skirt, then zips up with ease until next year. While you’ll need to ensure you have the space to store it, it makes setting up refreshingly easy.

How to Store Christmas Lights

Because few things ruin the festive vibe faster than trying to untangle a knotted mess of lights. Look for solutions with spools that you can wind lights around for quick and easy storage. Something with a case or hard shell is great, too, to protect the light bulbs from damage.

Sterilite Light Storage Bag
$22

Trust me — tossing your lights in a bag is not a sufficient storage solution. This organizing bin is the way to go, especially if you have multiple packs of lights to store. The plastic bin includes four removable reels to wrap up strands of Christmas lights or garland to prevent tangles (and spare your patience!).

How to Store Gift Wrap

I’m a chronic over-buyer when it comes to gift wrap. It’s easy to lose track of what you have, when it’s not all organized in a central location. To avoid making the same mistake, opt for an organizer that puts all of your supplies on full display — whether that’s one with clear compartments, or a wall-mounted unit that turns your wrapping paper into wall art.

Not only can it hold up to 27 rolls of wrapping paper (impressive), but there are also spacious interior pockets for gift bags, bows, tape, ribbons, and all the gifting accoutrement you desire. Its slim design fits perfectly under your bed, too!

How to Store Other Miscellaneous Things

For other seasonal pieces like soft blankets and bulky pillows, the storage solution might be as simple as a durable storage bag. And if you’re stumped on what to do with fragile items like figurines, don’t be afraid to think outside the box — literally, household items like wine racks can make for smart, space-saving storage!
