With summer just around the corner, the urge to hit the beach has never been stronger — at least for me. Adding coastal decor elements to your home is a great way to make it feel a bit more summery, whether you live by the beach or not. And this Instagram user’s giant homemade candle will be a must-make ahead of the summer season this year — the vessel is just so trendy and cute!

Making Your Own Shell-Shaped Candle Is So Easy

“This oversized shell I found could be used for a lot! Florals, wine bottles, or just using it as a decorative bowl — but I just had to put a candle inside,” Christina Clericuzio wrote in a caption.

Christina originally sourced her big candle vessel from HomeGoods. Using unscented pillar candles and a set of cotton candle wicks from Amazon, she turned this basic shell bowl into a one-of-a-kind massive candle.

This resin shell bowl from Amazon is similar to the HomeGoods find Christina used for her DIY, and the ceramic material makes it safer than a resin vessel. However, you should always monitor your candles when lit and not let them burn too long (or leave them burning when you’re out of the room).

Christina melted the wax inside these Mega Candles prayer candles in boiling water before pouring it into her seashell. If you don’t have any use for the empty pillar vases, you could also use wax chips, like these soy wax chips from Amazon, which can be melted in a glass bowl before you pour them into your vessel.

Finally, you’ll want to place wicks at the bottom of your shell before you pour your melted wax in. This set from Amazon comes with cotton wicks, glue dots to position them exactly where you need them, and wick holders to keep the wicks upright as you pour the wax. You can also use chopsticks like Christina did to keep your wicks in place.

You could add essential oils to your melted wax to give the candle a scent — or turn them into bug repellers by adding citronella oil! Big seashell candles are great for kitchen islands, patio tables, and more, and they would also make amazing gifts. Try out this DIY project and prepare for the most stylish summer ever.
