Bedrooms are cozy and personal spaces to begin with, and even within them there might be spots that feel extra special, like your side of the bed, a cozy reading chair, or a vanity for getting ready every morning.

In DIYer Abby Starobin’s (@symphonylanedesign) bedroom, she’s especially proud of the closet wall makeover. “I like that it’s a nice scene I can look at when I’m in bed,” she says. “That’s really important, to enjoy looking at what you’re often facing during your day.”

The trim is a lovely cornflower blue.

Abby painted the trim around her entire bedroom, but she says “it really helps accentuate the height of the closets.”

“The cornflower trim is just such a pretty and relaxing color and brings me so much joy,” she adds. “Painting the trim is another way to add a punch of color without painting an entire wall. I also painted the door knobs to match, which I love. They were previously painted white.”

On the back of her closet doors (which Abby says don’t close well, but that’s part of their charm!), she used wallpaper samples and her own belongings as artwork.

“I also found a pair of little vintage bird paintings that thankfully fit perfectly in the top section of the doors,” she says. “I also painted my existing mirror, which was previously brown and silver, from my rustic-chic-loving days. When I decorate, I really try to use or repurpose what I have as much as possible.”

The entire bedroom embraces thriftiness and DIY projects.

The rest of the bedroom, where the cornflower blue trim continues, has the same spirit of thriftiness. There are tons of Facebook Marketplace finds, like the vintage desk-turned-vanity area. Behind the vanity is a mint green (DecoArt’s Refreshing) painted arch, plus plug-in wall sconces from West Elm that Abby painted pink.

“This is also my first solo apartment, so it was extra important to me to make it a place I loved, Abby told Apartment Therapy in her home tour. “It is definitely renter-friendly! Gotta love paint.” For more renter-friendly bedroom makeovers, check out this $25 bedroom makeover project and this Palm Springs-inspired stunner.
