A Bold Jersey City Rental Has Speakeasy-Meets-Art Gallery Vibes
When Brandon Lightfoot and his partner moved into this 1,200-square-foot, two-bedroom apartment in Jersey City a year and a half ago, the rental was an industrial-style loft with warm and inviting vibes. “The open layout, high ceilings, and large windows added a spacious and airy feel,” Brandon begins. “The living area was highlighted by a vintage fireplace, adding character, while the neutral color palette made it a perfect canvas for personalization. The outdoor patio provided an urban retreat, perfect for relaxing or entertaining. Overall, it was a trendy and cozy space with a lot of charm and potential.”
“After I added my touch, the apartment has transformed into a richly layered, artful, and deeply personal space,” Brandon continues. “The decor is bold and eclectic with mid-century and Afrocentric influences. The vibrant wallpaper, textured walls, and dramatic lighting create an intimate and stylish atmosphere.”
“Our apartment is a vibrant reflection of our identity as African American gay men with a deep love for art, culture, travel, and food. The design is unapologetically bold, celebrating Black artistry and storytelling through a curated gallery wall of striking Afrocentric portraits and culturally rich imagery,” Brandon continues to write. “The use of textured walls, dramatic wallpaper, and layered decor evokes a sense of worldliness, drawing inspiration from global influences while staying deeply rooted in Black culture.”
When it comes to sharing decorating and shopping advice for creating a stylish home, Brandon says his answers all revolve around smart and budget-friendly ideas that add character to spaces. “By sourcing unique vintage and resale finds from platforms like Facebook Marketplace and Apartment Deco, you create a home filled with personality and history while keeping costs low. Apartment-friendly DIY hacks like peel-and-stick wallpaper and backsplash add style without permanence, making design both accessible and flexible. And with Google Image Search, you ensure you’re getting the best price for high-quality pieces. Your approach makes home decor both intentional and affordable, proving that great design doesn’t have to break the bank.”
