Before Juni Halseth Stenberg and her partner bought this three-bedroom apartment — in a building from 1894 in Oslo’s Grünerløkka area — two years ago, it was in a pretty worn and outdated state. Juni describes it as being neutral, with lots of white, not a lot personality, and “in need of love.”

But the couple who identify as “creative, playful, and design-driven people” were just the right folks to bring this historic home back to life. “We love experimenting with bold paint colors, statement lighting, and a mix of old and new,” she writes. “Our walls showcase both personal art and collected pieces, and the home tells our story: where we’ve been, what inspires us, and the things we want to surround ourselves with every day.”

"Invest in a few statement pieces you truly love, mix them with affordable finds, and don’t be afraid of color," Juni writes when asked for her best decorating advice. "Small details like lighting, textiles, and art can completely transform the atmosphere of a room without a big budget."

They undertook many renovation projects in the space, “from refinishing the old wooden floors to updating the layout to make the space flow better,” she writes. “We’ve painted all the rooms in bold paint colors, installed a new kitchen with baseboards and added stucco to give it a built-in feel, laid historic tiles in the entryway, upgraded the bathroom surfaces with micro cement, and replaced the old bathroom furniture.”

"Everything should have a designated place, and go back there after use," Juni writes when asked about her best organizing advice. "Regularly go through your belongings and sell what you no longer want. You can make good money selling unused items. The feeling of letting things go is AT LEAST as satisfying as buying something new!"

The home now is a perfect blend of the apartment’s architecture charm, plus the owners’ fun personalities. They use words like warm, character-filled, and eclectic to describe it today. “A mix of old charm and modern touches, with bold colors, vintage details, art, and personality,” Juni writes.
