This Townhouse’s Cabinet Color Will Convince You to Rethink White Kitchens Forever
“When the pandemic hit, I realized I needed more space if I was going to be working from home,” begins Charlotte Hohorst, VP of design at the communications firm JBC PR. “If you’ve ever apartment hunted on the west side of Los Angeles, you know the pickings are pretty slim unless you have a huge budget. I saw what felt like a dozen apartments that just didn’t check the boxes for space, good light, and charm.”

But when Charlotte first walked into this two-story, two-bedroom townhouse in Los Angeles’ Brentwood area, she had just one thought: “Now we’re talkin!” Charlotte describes the rental as having a “dreamy layout, walkable neighborhood, and amazing light from big windows. It was old and pretty dated — but I had a blank canvas and a lot of time at home on my hands.”
Charlotte has been in the space for five years, and says that the first few years were all about how she “Facebook Marketplaced and DIY’d my way from a serial-killer-esque blank canvas to what I would call a colorful, euphoric riot. My friends are my biggest cheerleaders, and I felt so encouraged to go bold throughout the process. I would ask for gut checks like ‘Should I just paint this whole room navy blue? Should I do this dragon wallpaper?’ and every time they would respond ‘Hell yeah.'”
While Charlotte did try to do a lot of renter-friendly changes, she “actually just one day decided I wasn’t going to get the deposit back, and let loose with reckless abandon. The real challenge for me was budget!” she admits. “If I had an unlimited budget, I would have gone a lot crazier. I think I would have covered every inch of every wall with art and replaced the fridge and stove. Instead I really leaned into Facebook Marketplace; I shopped the sales, the estate sales, the thrift shops. Don’t sleep on the furniture at Goodwill!”
