If you’re done with opening your closet and being met with an avalanche of shoes and not-so-folded sweaters, then you might be ready to upgrade your wardrobe experience with a closet organizer or two. However, not all dividers and shelving units are created equal. If you’re looking for shoe racks, knit dividers, and tidy cubby shelves but aren’t finding anything that looks minimalist or stylish, we’re here to help. We spoke with closet expert Celine Paone, design consultant at California Closets, a custom closet company, about her approach to organization and what you should be looking for. Paone’s advice? Keep it practical.

How to Organize a Closet

It’s easy to get lost in the sauce of closet organizers online. With a plethora of options to choose from (and so many you simply don’t need), it’s hard to know what’s worth the purchase. When it comes to narrowing down your options, Paone says to prioritize what’s important to you. “If you are someone who likes to hang clothes and accessories, focus on that. If you would rather fold your items, incorporate more shelves and/or drawers.” The key is to concentrate on your specific needs, steering away from the influence of social media trends. As Paone wisely notes, “People often get swayed by Pinterest or Instagram, but the real solution lies in what suits you best and simplifies your life.”

What Kind of Closet Organizers to Look For

Emphasizing the importance of self-focus and personalized needs, Paone highlights a favorite organizational solution: acrylic drawer inserts. Ideal for jewelry, sunglasses, belts, and more, these inserts seamlessly keep accessories neatly tucked away yet readily visible when you’re searching for them.

Whether you’re looking for whole-closet organizing systems or small products that are designed to tidy a single thing, we gathered some closet organizers ahead that are as useful as they are beautiful — and you can score each one on Amazon.
