Moving in with a significant other is a relationship milestone and can be an exciting adventure. However, that’s not to say that designing a space together might come with some challenges. Combining styles with whoever you’re cohabitating with can sometimes be tricky. But Sarah Crawford and her partner Aidan Burke thought ahead.

“We started looking early to get a sense of what we both liked,” Sarah, who posts about their apartment on TikTok, says. “This unit was the first one we toured that was available for our move-in date. We took it on the spot.”

The 1910, one-bedroom apartment is in Manhattan’s dreamy West Village neighborhood. The tree-lined street, proximity to the subway, and being situated next to a music school (Sarah and Aidan hear performances!) enchanted them about the building. However, their specific 400-square-foot unit came with eye-catching details, too.

“We loved the dark wood floors, crown molding, and charming pocket doors,” Sarah explains. “Having two-bedroom closets has made moving in together easier, and for NYC standards, the washer, dryer, and dishwasher were welcome bonuses.”

It’s been one year since the couple began renting the apartment and since then, they’ve focused on filling their home with functional and sentimental furniture. Whether it’s the decor that reminds them of their shared New England heritage or Sarah’s great-great aunt’s wedding quilt, they’ve created a cozy home that will surely be the space for more happy memories.
