White living room with burnt orange sofa, gallery wall, and tall white shelves

If you close your eyes and think of one piece of IKEA furniture, I’m willing to bet it’s the IKEA EXPEDIT bookcase. This vintage IKEA bookshelf is sadly no longer in production (although its modern cousin, the KALLAX Shelf Unit, is fairly close). That doesn’t stop EXPEDIT from being one of the most recognized and memorable IKEA furniture pieces, though — probably ever

Like most IKEA icons, the EXPEDIT bookcase has no shortage of dupes — and I just spotted one at Costco that has those major vintage IKEA vibes. While these cubby-like shelves are easy to find at retailers like Target and Walmart, they often don’t get the exact design details right. However, the O’nin Room Divider with 8 Storage Bins is nearly spot-on.

This cubby bookshelf features a similar thick, sturdy frame with more slender shelf dividers, just like the EXPEDIT (which skews a little chunkier than KALLAX overall, in my opinion). It also boasts eight cubby-like shelves that you can leave as-is for an open shelving look, or mix and match with bins (included in the set!) or baskets to hide your knickknacks. It’s constructed from composite wood and has a cam-lock system, which makes it super easy to put together — even if you’re not the most handy person out there.

Similar to the OG IKEA style, it’s easy to stack a couple of these shelves together to create one large bookcase. Or place one horizontally (so you can hang your TV on the wall) and another one or two vertically right next to it for more of a built-in look in your living room.

In addition to Costco’s EXPEDIT dupe, the Stow-Away Smoked Oak 8-Cube Organizer from The Home Depot has similar vibes. The shelf also comes in a lacquered white look, but you can also choose between dark brown smoked oak and lighter lintel oak finishes, if the warm wood tones match your design aesthetic better.

You really can’t go wrong with any of these IKEA dupes. Sure, the prices might not be the same as good ol’ EXPEDIT, but the look is spot-on. And who couldn’t use another bookcase, am I right?
