Front door mailbox slots have to be one of the cutest features on a home’s exterior — it’s a classic detail that arrived in the U.S. in 1923, which made it quicker for postal service workers to deliver mail rather than waiting for someone to answer the door. I’m forever jealous of people who have this charming feature, but it can also make a mess in the entryway. Although the annoyance is real, one content creator found the absolute cutest way to manage it and you wouldn’t expect where she found the item.

“Who knew this little basket would get so much attention??” Greer Gagnier wrote in a recent Instagram caption of a video showing off her hack for collecting the mail from her slot. “We love our classic mail slot but we’re so tired of picking up all of our mail off the floor. Adding a simple bike basket was the perfect solution, beautiful, and practical!”

A bike basket? How brilliant is that?

“I want this, even though I don’t even have a mail slot,” one person commented on Greer’s post. Another said, “Cutest mail catch ever!!”

A Bike Basket Is The Cutest Mail Accessory Ever

It turns out that there are so many antique-style woven and wicker bike baskets available on Amazon, and Greer realized that they’re the perfect size and shape to attach to her front door under the mail slot. She did so by simply installing screw hooks to the door (Command hooks will likely work, too, if you want to choose a renter-friendly method), and hooking her basket onto the hooks.

The flat back of the bike basket, which was invented over a century ago, is ideal for sitting snugly against a door, yet the tops of the baskets are wide enough to catch the mail as it comes in.

As if having a functional mail slot in your door isn’t charming enough, this bike basket DIY mail catcher will make your front door mail slot all the more cottagecore and adorable. Again, you’re living my dream life! Please live it to the fullest!
