Velvet’s plush texture and rich, pearlescent sheen will never go out of style, but that doesn’t mean it can’t reinvent itself every now and then. Allow me to introduce you to cut velvet, the fabrication editors can’t stop talking about this fall. “Velvets offer the ultimate luxe look, but they’re definitely everywhere — sofas, pillows, drapery,” says AT’s executive home director, Danielle Blundell. “That’s why I’m loving cut velvet accents for the fall. They’re a fresh way to work velvet’s sumptuous texture into a space.”

Danielle is so right. Cut velvet feels new and exciting, while staying true to velvet’s signature fanciness. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

What Is Cut Velvet?

The cut velvet trend is exactly what it sounds like: “A pattern is cut into the pile of the fabric,” explains sewist and fabric retailer Kelly Smith of @studiokellysmith on Instagram. “Traditional velvet is different in that the pile is one smooth dense layer.” It also has a ton of aesthetic range; cut velvet pillows can be subtle or standout depending on the colors and intricacy of the design. “The multicolored cut velvets that are out there bring even more personality to a project and create wonderful statement pieces,” Smith adds.

If you’re interested in experimenting with the trend for yourself, your sofa is a great place to start. I took the liberty of combing the internet for the most stylish cut velvet throw pillows and cushion covers available. Keep reading for my findings.

10 Ways to Try the Cut Velvet Trend

Cut Velvet Archways Pillow Cover
$54

A geometric design gives this pillow cover a cool op-art effect, bringing a new dimension to your sofa. Its plush texture has the slightest sheen, too, for an elevated look. It comes in four colors, and you can’t go wrong with any of them.

Siscovers Starla Lagoon Cut Velvet Throw Pillow
$76$62

There’s something about the abstract pattern on this cut velvet throw pillow that gives me an Aquamarine vibe. Maybe it’s the turquoise cut velvet and the watercolor aesthetic (it looks like sunlight rippling on the sea floor!). This one includes a fluffy yet firm insert, so all you have to do is set it on your sofa.

Maro Grey Cut Viscose Throw Pillow Cover
$62$30

The wavy motif on this pillow cover looks so psychedelic, while the plush gray velvet feels luxe and sophisticated. Cut velvet is the perfect material to showcase its intricate design, too. It feels as good as it looks! You can also buy the zippered cover with or without an insert (in down or a down-alternative fill).

Smithy Home Couture Velvet Domino Throw Pillow Cover
$158

This cut velvet throw pillow will appeal to minimalists and maximalists alike with its playful domino-inspired pattern. For starters, the creamy neutral velvet complements any sofa, and the clean square cutouts are simple, but eye-catching. It’s on the pricier side, I know, but the craftsmanship speaks for itself (it’s completely handmade!).

Yangest Wavy Velvet Throw Pillow Cover
$18

If you’re looking for a low-stakes way to experiment with the trend, this budget-friendly pillow cover is a safe bet. The wavy cutouts have a funky, retro look to them, like something you’d find in a ’70s-themed pad. Just note they’re only on one side. The back of the cover is solid and finished with a hidden zipper.

Abstract florals, subtle animal print, or an agate, composition notebook-like motif are some of the marbled cutouts you'll find on this pillow cover. They're open to interpretation and sure to style seamlessly with any decor aesthetic. They conveniently come in a two-pack, so you can split them up between rooms or double the texture on a single sofa.

Nirvan Velvet Dot Throw Pillow
$70

This dotted piece is a master class in cut velvet. Except here, it’s the negative space between dots that’s cut out for extra visual impact. Factor in the pillow’s lustrous sheen, and this piece takes on a bubbly, textured appearance that elevates even the simplest of sofas.

Clearly, cut velvet and geometric designs go hand in hand, and this pillow cover proves it. The jewel-toned dots look extra rich set against beige canvas, creating the most satisfying combination of textures. Etsy shoppers rave about the quality craftsmanship, too!

Multicolored Cut Velvet Pillow Cover

Chevron is back! Kind of. This cut velvet pillow cover is, in my opinion, a more stylish take on the highly controversial pattern. It’s also the ideal balance of neutrals and brights, making it a great fit in most spaces, no matter the season.
