After a long day, there’s nothing better than taking a hot shower to melt the stress away. But to really enjoy it, you need to set up your bathroom for ultimate relaxation. The best way to do that? It’s all in the lighting.

“Dark showering” has been trending on TikTok recently, but it’s actually something I’ve personally been doing for years. Basically the trend encourages those who shower at night to do so with the lights off, and instead light a candle or turn on a waterproof lamp for an ambient glow. Whatever you do, just don’t use “the big light!”

I’m a night-shower person; the combination of cozy lighting and warm water helps calm my nervous system in preparation for a good night’s sleep. Other “dark shower” enthusiasts say it feels luxurious and spa-like, too. That got me thinking: What else could I add to my bathroom to help make my nights even more relaxing?

How to Make Your Bathroom Feel Like Your Own Personal Spa

Trust me: It doesn’t actually take a lot of money — or effort — to make your bathroom feel more Zen. For example, I pick up a bundle of eucalyptus from Trader Joe’s every week or two to hang over the shower head. It makes the shower smell great, and research shows that greenery can boost your mental health. To further enhance the olfactory experience, you could also add a shower steamer (similar to a bath bomb, but for the floor of the shower), but I usually just turn on my candle warmer with a similar scent.

But that’s only the very beginning. Check out a few more of my favorite finds below to help elevate your night showers, too.

COTECRAM Aquaspa Shower Lamp
$34

The most important element of a dark shower is definitely the lighting. One of these waterproof rechargeable lamps is a non-negotiable. To really make the room glow, you could also try a wave light, which mimics the way water shines on walls in an indoor pool in the dark. They come with a variety of color settings to suit your preference.

Vinkor Flameless Candles, 9-Pack
$26$24

These are the flameless candles I use in my own bathroom. They’re battery-operated, waterproof, and remote-controlled — and the various differing heights make them look great clustered together for greater effect.

NearMoon Rain Shower Head
$28$16

What could be more luxurious than a rainfall shower? But don’t worry — you don’t need to call a plumber or reroute your pipes to the ceiling to get the effect. This square-shaped rainfall showerhead from Amazon can be swapped in for your regular wall-mounted showerhead in less than 10 minutes. I have the same one, and it might just be the best and easiest home upgrade I’ve made so far!

The Eloise Scallop Milk Glass Flush Sconce Wall Light
$168

If you’re game for a slightly more complicated upgrade, however, it might be worth a call to your electrician. While “the big light” is off-limits, you might try dimmable bathroom sconces instead. I think sconces provide more flattering bathroom lighting than overhead fixtures anyway, and the Eloise sconces from Anthropologie are so incredibly stylish.

JBL Clip 3
$38

An absolute non-negotiable for me is a good shower speaker. Whether you’re playing Mozart, whale sounds, or just your favorite playlist, music is so important to help create whatever ambiance you want. Try this clip-on waterproof Bluetooth speaker from JBL, or try to find one with a suction cup to attach to the shower walls.

Plush Turkish Cotton Towel
$40

While your default might be neutral, spa-like towel colors like white or beige, I think a darker, richer color makes the overall aesthetic much more luxurious and moody. Plus, they don’t show dirt or flaws as easily, so they’ll likely last you longer, too. I love these deep-wine-colored towels from Anthropologie.
