Vacuuming is a chore I don’t take lightly. As someone who sheds a lot of hair and has a pet who also sheds a lot of fur, it’s a cleaning task I have to do several times a week to prevent a dust-filled home. While using a robot vacuum regularly helps me to cut down on dirt and debris tremendously, my cordless vacuum is the real MVP — and nothing has impressed me like the Dyson Gen5detect has.

Design Features That Stand Out

Dyson vacuums have a reputation for being top-tier appliances, and the Dyson Gen5detect is labeled as “the most powerful cordless vacuum” the brand has to date. It has advanced suction power, HEPA filtration, and the longest runtime (70 minutes) of any single-battery Dyson vacuum. There are three power modes: eco, auto, and boost, which you can switch between based on floor type or to maximize your battery’s life.

There are two cleaner heads and three tools: Fluffy Optic cleaner head with illumination technology that’ll reveal every speck on your floors, Digital Motorbar cleaner head with hair removal vanes to automatically detangle hair, a combination tool, a hair screw tool, and a built-in dusting and crevice tool.

Some other standout features include the single-button control, which means no trigger button to keep the vacuum going (just press the button on the display and you’re good to go!), and no-touch bin emptying capability.

How It Performed

I can attest that the Dyson Gen5detect exceeded my expectations, especially in suction power and battery life. It can take on my two-story home (rugs, stairs, and furniture included!) on a single run without issue when switching between eco and auto modes. When you’re using boost, the battery drains faster, so that’s something to pay attention to on the LCD screen to see how much time you have left as you’re using it.

Having a built-in dusting and crevice tool was an impressive feature. It makes vacuuming an entirely one-tool experience, switching from a cordless vacuum to a handheld one in seconds, instead of having to walk back and forth to the closet to grab another attachment.

Overall, I enjoyed using the Digital Motorbar cleaner head on all surfaces (especially rugs) because it avoids any hair tangles, but the Fluffy Optic cleaner head was even more fun to use. The illumination technology highlights dust and dirt on your floors that you’d be surprised was even there.

It’s also the only vacuum cleaner head I have ever used that could go on my one Ruggable rug with ease. It’s a low-profile rug in my living room that’s been difficult for any vacuum to go over. It’ll either get stuck or bunch up the corners, no matter how I approach it. But so far, using the Fluffy Optic cleaner head of the Dyson Gen5detect has been effortless.

Good to Know

If you are anything like me, then you’ll probably have to empty the bin often due to the sheer amount of hair and dirt that’s collected. However, this is an easy process because it has no-touch capability.

Because there’s a built-in dusting and crevice tool, I didn’t find myself reaching for the combination tool as much. The hair screw tool has been great to use for the stairs, though.

The biggest complaint about Dyson vacuums is the cost. I understand the concern. The Dyson Gen5detect is an investment piece, but we think it’s worth it. Like one reviewer said: The Dyson Gen5detect is “the Rolls-Royce of vacuum cleaners,” and I agree. It is a top-notch vacuum that’ll only make cleaning easier.

Would We Recommend the Dyson Gen5detect?

The answer is yes. Although a big ticket purchase, the Dyson Gen5detect is worth the splurge — and right now, it’s $150 off on the Dyson website.
