When it comes to shopping for sofas, AT editors have learned a thing or two over the years. They’ve tested literally hundreds (I mean, have you seen our Personal Shopper series?) across every design aesthetic, from modern and contemporary to coastal and boho. But of all the designs we’ve looked at, mid-century modern sofas are by far the most popular. I get it — the clean lines, retro vibe, and subtle angles are undeniably stylish.

The look is so ubiquitous, big-time retailers like Wayfair and West Elm have made it the bulk of their catalog (along with tons of other styles too, of course). You can definitely find stylish options at both stores, but there are other sofas out there that you may be missing. Keep reading for the ones approved by AT editors.

Jollene 78" Fabric Sofa
$1,299

After testing all the sofas at Macy’s, editors named the Jollene as the store’s best mid-century modern sofa. Its sleek silhouette, tapered legs, and beautiful wood frame certainly fit the bill. The midnight blue fabric takes it to the next level. House Tours Editor Cullen Ormond said it feels soft and durable, too. “It’s a stylish option for people who want a retro-inspired sofa that has a sink-in feel,” she wrote.

Jasper
$1,999

The Jasper’s slim profile and chic wooden legs give it major, mid-century modern appeal. Editors say it’s particularly well-suited for small spaces thanks to its compact dimensions — it comes in 60-, 71-, 86-, 96-, and 98-inch lengths, so you can find a size perfect for your space. “Honestly, it’s hard to find any faults with this sofa,” wrote AT’s Editor-in-Chief Charli Penn, and I have to agree!

Briar Sleeper Sofa
$3,341$2,339

If you’re looking for a mid-century modern sleeper, you’ll want to check out the Briar. The tapered rubberwood legs, tufted bench seat, and bolster pillows totally hit the mark. AT editors were seriously impressed with the comfort of the mattress when they tested it in-store (you don’t feel the support bars at all!). And if you’re tight on space, it has a modest footprint at only 80 inches long.

Sven 88" Tufted Leather Sofa
$1,699

AT’s executive home director, Danielle Blundell, loves the Sven Sofa’s mid-century modern silhouette and high-quality construction. “The leather truly patinas so nicely, and the overstuffed back cushions and tufted single seat cushion are super-comfy, high-end touches you don’t always see at this price point,” she wrote. It also comes in a 72-inch loveseat that’s perfect for small apartments.

Mirasol Sofa
$1,400$1,260

Editors say Raymour and Flanigan’s Mirasol Sofa offers major mid-century modern vibes at a more affordable price point compared with others on the market. The button-tufted cushions give it a chic tailored look, while plush padded arms are perfect for a midday snooze. Plus, there are 23 colors to choose from, so you’re bound to find one to complement your space.

Owen Chaise Sectional
$2,499

This Castlery sofa is surprisingly compact for a sectional. “It feels big. Like, really big … However, it’s actually pretty compact for a sectional, and it doesn’t take up our entire living room,” wrote one editor in his review, so it’s a great midsize option for houses and apartments alike. The Owen’s deep seat and plush cushions look so inviting, while the wood frame gives it a subdued mid-century modern look.

Modway Upholstered Loveseat
$831

Tell me this Amazon loveseat doesn’t look like a rare vintage find. Its flared arms and legs, and tufted back cushion are unmistakably mid-century modern. Editors also say it’s one of the best for small spaces at only 78 inches wide. You can’t beat the under $800 price tag, either!

If you’re willing to splurge, the Emmy Sofa will be the prized jewel of your living room. It’s mid-century modern meets cozy, according to editors, with a stylish wood base and pillowy, nappable cushions. It’s also small space-friendly at a modest 80 inches wide. It’s an investment piece that’ll never go out of style.

Nomad Sofa
$1,949$1,364

The Nomad Plus is the even comfier version of Burrow’s best-selling modular sofa. It’s mid-century modern-inspired, for sure, but could easily blend in with more contemporary and traditional spaces alike. “This seating staple strikes the perfect balance between modern and traditional,” wrote Shopping Writer Nikol Slatinska in her review. With reversible tufted back cushions and a variety of upholstery, leg finishes, and armrest styles, it’s incredibly versatile, too.

This faux leather sectional is shockingly stylish for the price (it’s no wonder it’s AT-approved!). Measuring 73 inches wide, it’s pretty compact for a sectional sofa, making it a great pick for apartment dwellers. And it has all the telltale signs of a mid-century modern piece: tapered legs, clean lines, and a rich saddle brown shade that looks totally retro.
