“We’d been renting this place for three years — great location, decent light, and juuust mediocre-enough finishes to remind us daily that it was definitely not ours,” begins NYC-based real estate agent Eric Goldie of this 700-square-foot apartment in SoHo he owns with husband, Jeremy Batoff.

Eric Goldie and Jeremy Batoff split their time between this 700-square-foot apartment in New York and their farm in Maryland. "While we’re not here full-time, it still feels like home in all the ways that matter."

“Jeremy and I used to joke (a little too confidently) that we’d never buy it. I mean, it was fine, but turning it into a real home would take a full-blown renovation … and a small miracle,” Eric continues. “Then came the twist: Our landlord gave us just a few weeks’ notice that she was listing it for sale. Cue: mild panic and a strong desire to do absolutely no house hunting. Out of sheer laziness (and maybe a little fate), we ended up buying it.”

Eric and Jeremy’s plan? They made an agreement. “‘We’ll renovate slowly,’ we said. Cute, right? Fast forward two weeks after closing, and I had contractors walking through the door with demo plans,” Eric admits. “Jeremy looked mildly betrayed — but also impressed. What can I say? Patience has never been my strong suit, especially when it comes to real estate.”
