“They match other home decor elements like pillows and curtains, creating a cohesive, stylish look,” says Blanton, who incorporates decorative tissue box covers into her design projects. “They’re reusable, customizable, and add a cozy, tactile element.” Unlike the lacquered boxes that used to be popular, these upholstered covers are more aligned with traditional aesthetics, like cottagecore design, that have become so popular today. Fabric tissue covers are soft, sweet, and have a touch of custom personalization that plastic covers often lack. 

According to designer Stephanie Mahaney, it all comes down to availability and price point. “With easy access to online retailers — including Amazon — these stylish accents are now more accessible than ever,” she says. “It’s a simple way to refresh your space without a big investment.”

Fabric tissue box covers might be having a moment, but they also require some TLC. Not only will you need to wash your cover periodically, but Blanton also points out that lower-quality fibers might wear and tear over time. “Linen, cotton, or velvet materials are great choices, as they’re soft, durable, and sustainable as opposed to polyesters and other man-made materials,” she recommends.

It’s best to consult your existing decor when deciding on color and pattern. “A tissue box cover that clashes with your existing decor or is too bold for the space can stand out in an unappealing way,” Blanton explains. “To avoid this, choose covers that either blend with or complement the dominant colors and textures in the room, ensuring a harmonious look.” Stripes and subtle patterns like florals or paisleys, Blanton says, are fair game.  

Style is at the forefront of this micro-trend, but remember your tissue box cover has to be functional, too. “Look for designs that allow for easy refills, and ensure that the cover doesn’t make it difficult to grab tissues quickly,” Blanton adds. “A great balance between style and convenience is key.”
