“Taking life on the road is our way of breaking out of routines and habits and shifting momentum in a new direction. Comfort can lead to complacency, but adventure is deliberate,” wrote Ben and Mande Tucker, the young couple behind Fern the Bus, on their website. They’re not the first people to DIY convert a bus into a rolling home on wheels, but their design style, life philosophies, and smart storage solutions are worth the in-depth look.

What started out as a 24-foot yellow school bus is now a soothing home despite the small size. The couple—who did all the work themselves, opted to maximize the amount of light in the interior, so the space is relatively open, and the color palette and materials used are white-painted pine, unstained cedar wood, butcher block countertops, live-edge wood accents, and other natural textures.

It’s not just aesthetics that the couple kept in mind when doing this DIY conversion; they also thought about function and how their small family—which now includes new baby Sawyer!—would use the space. So a full-size bed in the back is ultra cozy and comfy, and a modern roof deck provides even more living space (and great views).
