A few weeks ago I was organizing my chaotic kitchen junk drawer (aka the Bermuda Triangle of takeout menus, twist ties, and birthday candles) when I spotted a handful of loose batteries rolling around with coins, keys, and random metal odds and ends. As soon as I heard them clinking around, it immediately reminded me of a story I read on The Kitchn a while back about how loose batteries in drawers can actually start fires.

In the harrowing article, the writer shares how a friend of hers had a major house fire that sparked from a few loose batteries in a recycling bin in her garage. Turns out, this isn’t just internet fear-mongering! While it’s a horrifying tale, it’s not just a one-off — it’s backed by real fire safety data.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), batteries (especially 9-volt batteries) can spark if the terminals come into contact with metal — even if they’re spent. That means if one touches keys, foil, paper clips, or even another battery, it can potentially ignite surrounding materials. The USFA specifically advises that batteries should be stored away from anything that can burn.

So, that chaotic mess of takeout menus and half-used batteries? It’s not as harmless as it seems. The good news? The fix is ridiculously easy.

How to Prevent Fires in Your Kitchen Junk Drawer

To prevent anything from happening, I bought a 10-pack of slim battery organizers on Amazon for just $9.99 (only $1 each!). They’re from a brand called Tenergy, and each case fits a single battery (either AA or AAA) in its own hard plastic box. I stacked them up, labeled them with a Sharpie, and within five minutes our battery situation was fully under control.

While it was an affordable, simple solution, it honestly gave me more peace of mind than I expected. Instead of batteries clanking around with sharp gadgets or metal junk, they’re now neatly stored and protected. If one leaks or dies, I can just pop open the case and deal with it without touching everything else in the drawer. If you have a larger collection, this version from QVC is a little bigger, holding up to 184 batteries of all shapes and sizes.

So no, this isn’t the prettiest kitchen makeover I’ve ever done. But it might be the smartest! And isn’t peace of mind priceless?
