This Mostly Untouched Frank Lloyd Wright “Mushroom” House Is For Sale
The legendary Frank Lloyd Wright designed some unique properties in his day, but we’ve never seen one quite like this. Needless to say, the starchitect proved he was a fun guy with this mushroom-esque structure, now for sale for $1.5 million.
The Sol Friedman House is part of Wright’s Usonia community in Pleasantville, New York—just 50 minutes north of Manhattan. The mostly untouched home was built in 1948, and features an overlapping circular roof and masonry design, with his signature curved living space, abundant windows, built-ins, and plenty of his favorite Cherokee Red hue. The 2,100 square foot three bedroom, two bath home also has a center stone fireplace.
This particular Usonian home features a carport that looks more like a mushroom than a normal building. The structure also has built-in seating underneath for some shaded spots to relax and take in the bucolic wooded view.
The Usonia Historic District in NYC-adjacent Westchester County is made up of 47 such homes, three designed personally by the architect (this one included) and the rest’s plans approved by him. He also decided where each house would be placed, deciding on a circular design while preserving most of the original trees and “encouraging the flow of the land.”
The property is listed for $1.5 million.
