The summer season is synonymous with nostalgia and anticipation. It’s exciting to bask in the longer days — the same way you did when you were a kid — and make the most of them with visits to beloved baseball stadiums, shorelines, and roadside stands. At home, the grill is prepped as usual, and all spaces look and feel brighter and more casual.

If there’s a fabric that unites the summer experience — a pattern that recalls bygone eras and current trends — it’s gingham. And that’s why I’m calling it as the pattern of summer. I put together a little shoppable moment for you — just in case you want to channel its classic, warm-weather Americana vibes in your space.

Why Is Gingham the Pattern of Summer?

This classic checkerboard motif can conjure up memories of picnics and barbecues from the past, but it’ll likely be spotted at those same events before this current season is through. And when gingham appears in living areas, bedrooms, kitchens, and bathrooms, there’s a certain comforting quality that will never go out of style.

As you gear up to embrace all the best parts of summer, don’t forget to make its unofficial pattern yours. Here’s how to bring gingham into your home with five stylish options.

How to Get the Gingham Look at Home

Classic Organic Percale Gingham Sheet Set
$225$80

Gingham makes for a sweet finishing touch in a bedroom — particularly on bed sheets. It’s playful and colorful, and coordinates well with the carefree attitude of summer. Even if you’re not sleeping in because school’s out, a gingham pattern makes it feel like you could.

Checker Stoneware Planter
$20

Summer is patio season, and what better way to make your greenery pop than to place it in a gingham pot? Whether it’s holding fresh herbs for alfresco meals, or a succulent that loves the heat, this pot will pair well with whatever you’d like to grow.

$20 at Target
Gingham Tablecloth
$158$110

Get ready to make your tablescape look effortlessly welcoming with a classic gingham tablecloth. You could modernize the design by choosing from variations of blue or green, but you can’t go wrong with the timelessness of red. It’s pretty much asking for a hot dog.

$110 at Serena & Lily
Caleb Gingham Rug
$499

Ground your living room, playroom, or bedroom in an Americana palette with a gingham rug that’s unabashedly red, white, and blue. It’ll coordinate well with neutral furnishings, as well as woven textures and lightly stained woods.
