As the weather gets warmer, it’s always nice to consider sprucing up your outdoor space, whether it be a full-on yard, a wrap-around porch, or a small city apartment patio, to make it more livable or sellable. But it can be overwhelming to figure out where to start if you’re working with an empty space or trying to zhuzh up a half-decorated one. Do you want it to be a grilling and entertaining space, or to have an herb garden

There are a lot of factors to consider, especially since indoor couches and tables don’t typically get exposed to wind, rain, and bugs. Home stagers are a great resource when you want to transform a space, so I reached out to Shirin Sarikhani of the award-winning studio Seattle Staged to Sell & Design, which has been assisting homeowners and sellers for 20 years.

Acadia Outdoor Loveseat & Lounge Chair Set
$899

Just because you don’t have a huge backyard doesn’t mean you can’t fill it with a variety of pleasant seating options. This set from West Elm is handmade from acacia wood and features a deep lounge chair and wide bench-like loveseat for a beachy take on mid-century design. It doesn’t just look good — it’s “timeless, comfortable, and takes [up] less room,” Sarikhani explains.

SUNDSÖ Table and 2 Folding Chairs
$145

When space is limited, furniture that can be folded up and put away when not in use is a great choice, especially if you have long winters that make your outdoor space unusable for a portion of the year. Sarikhani loves this IKEA find that comes with a table and chairs for under $150. “I like them since they are easy to use, have seat cushions, and can be stored easily,” she says.

Pellebant Outdoor Patio Wicker Ottoman, Set of 2
$150

A patio can serve all sorts of purposes, so why shouldn’t your patio furniture do the same? “Any ottoman with storage is a plus,” notes Sarikhani, especially if you have items like games, quilts, or servingware that you don’t always want to have lying around. In addition to being a nice storage resource, this wicker ottoman from Amazon can also serve as a footrest, surface, seat, and eye-catching addition to your patio.

Outdoor 3-Piece Wood Patio Set

While you don’t want your yard or patio to feel too cramped, you also don’t want it to feel too empty. With a spacious loveseat and two chairs (all with cushions and removable, weather-resistant covers), this Nathan James outdoor seating set will fill out your space in style — though it is a bit of a splurge. “The fabric is durable, and that is a huge thing. Timeless and comfortable,” Sarikhani notes.

Beachcrest Home Rylan Indoor/Outdoor Bistro Table
$303

Tables can take up a lot of your precious outdoor space, but there are plenty of smaller options that’ll make a statement while still being practical — and this quaint yet sophisticated glass-top bistro table gives major Paris sidewalk café vibes. “We have this in our own inventory,” Sarikhani explains. “It adds a bit of glam and a café style to a small patio. Small, compact, and yet bold.”

SAFAVIEH Outdoor Vernon Rocking Chair
$327$129

“Rocking chairs for the front porch are so great,” Sarikhani says, but this Shaker-style eucalyptus rocking chair, which comes in a range of bold and neutral hues, will look right at home whether it’s out front, out back, or even on the side of your house. Once you sit back and start rocking, it’ll be easy to stay awhile.

If you’re looking to furnish an outdoor space that’s a little bigger, you’re in luck. This set of four solid wood dining chairs from Castlery is “not small, but amazing,” says Sarikhani, adding that they’re “elegant and comfortable” and will likely inspire any guests you have to “sit and linger longer.” Plus, even if your patio starts to feel cramped, there’s no rule saying you can’t take a chair or two indoors.
