A Family of 5’s Cozy, Minimal 240-Square-Foot Skoolie

Our converted school bus has been our home for about a year in a half now and we love it. It has completely transformed our lives. We went from living in a 2100 square foot house to 240 square feet. Our bus is minimally decorated and everything was self built. We spent six months converting the bus into our home and now it’s our favorite place to be.

Through living the “bus life” we have reconnected with nature and found true happiness in living in close quarters. There is no room for being disconnected. We do life together, spend more time together and experience more with one another than we did living in a large home. We love the simple life and wouldn’t have it another way!

Our Style: Minimal, industrial, modern, we prefer texture and building materials to be the decor of our home. We want our home to be beautiful even with nothing in it.

Inspiration: We were inspired by @mtmodern.airstream, @tincanhomestead, @mavistheairstream, @nomadicmillers, @birchandpine, and @midwestwanderers. The people of the tiny house movement are an amazing community to be a part of. We were inspired by people everyday who downsized and lived a simple, intentional life.

Favorite Element: Our kitchen. The front of our home is mainly white. We kept the original bus windows to help make the area have an illusion of space. Our kitchen has a beautiful butchers block counter. We love the way the wood grain pops off the white walls. The black sink and faucet standout in the counter top. It also is the most used area of the bus. We are cooking constantly. It’s a beautiful functional kitchen.

Biggest Challenge: Bad weather always proves to make us a bit stir crazy. We tend to spend rainy days at museums, trampoline parks, visiting friends etc.

Proudest DIY: I think the entire build of our bus was our proudest DIY. We gutted, framed and built in an entire house in this metal box. It’s now our home and was one of the most worthwhile, hardest project we’ve ever worked on.

Biggest Indulgence: Our subway tiled, lifted, shower with a clear skylight overhead is by far an indulgence in the “skoolie” world. It’s one of a kind and is absolutely beautiful.

Best Advice: Living a simple life has completely changed the way we experience joy. Our priorities have shifted from things to people. The bus has taught us to be intentional and brought our family closer. My advice is stop waiting to change your path, if you have goals pursue them! Stop waiting for the right time and do something. Nothing worth doing is ever easy!
