With tall ceilings, incredible art pieces and sweeping views of the Pyrenees mountains, this house charms everyone that walks in. But it didn’t always look this way. It might be hard to imagine cows ever being in this living room, but while this is a modern architectural structure now, it used to be a barn! The beautiful original wooden ceiling beams give it away.
Irma, the owner, was also the architect in charge of the renovation and explains that having her family as the client was not an easy task. Two parents and three kids will have wildly different expectations and needs when it comes to home remodeling. But in the end, the family was able to work together and Irma designed a house that’s a perfect fit for all who live inside.
Though the home’s interior is unarguably minimal and modern, it was important to Irma to respect the home’s past as well as reflect its natural surroundings. She wanted to maintain the essence of the countryside while incorporating modern elements. The result is a house that feels like a nook in the middle of the mountains where everybody can relax and enjoy themselves.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Modern and minimal. I don’t like to load the house with furniture. Less is more!
Inspiration: Switzerland’s modern country houses.
Favorite Element: The chimney. Everybody loves it.
Biggest Challenge: To convince my family to have a terrace! Nobody wanted it and now it’s the favorite place for the family.
What Friends Say: People love it. They are surprised at the size of the house.
Biggest Embarrassment: There is a room next to the kitchen that we don’t use at all. It would have been nice to have incorporated that space and have a bigger kitchen.
Proudest DIY: The terrace! That was my idea and I fought for it.
Biggest Indulgence: The chimney. We didn’t even think about installing another. Expensive… but worth every penny.
Best Advice: A lot of patience! And hire an interior designer for help.
Dream Sources: Santa I Cole and Casa Mitjana.
