This $10 IKEA Hack Looks Designer — And You Probably Already Have the Tool to Do It

For those who like to try their hand at a little DIY, one Instagram creator has shared an incredible hack for creating a luxe-looking candle for less than $10. The result? A striking piece of decor that looks like it was scored at a high-end boutique.

Paris-based Instagrammer Daniel Rodriguez (@alborodan) was inspired by Belgium-based artist Ann Vincent and Spanish design company Mulier Studio to create his own sculptural candles using just two simple tools: a pillar candle from IKEA, which typically costs around $7, and a utility knife. 

Placing the candle sideways on a plate, he began to carve out four shapes into the candle — a sphere, a triangular prism, a disk, and a rectangle. The utility knife left a rugged finish, which adds depth and texture to the piece. 

Followers were impressed with Dan’s genius DIY, praising his skills in the comments. “Wow … as a total candle lover, I’m inspired,” one commenter said, noting that you can use old nylon stockings or tights to rub out hard edges and scratches if you prefer a smoother look. “I myself like the chiseled look. Very brutalist vibe.”

“That’s so clever. Well done you,” a second wrote. “All the placements looked great.”
