One of the easiest, cheapest ways to get new houseplants is to grow them yourself, either by snipping off cuttings to propagate them in water or by planting your own seeds or bulbs. While you can use many different containers for propagating, you need something a little more specific to grow bulbs (like amaryllis or paperwhites) or seeds (like an avocado tree). Fortunately, a newly released set of vases from IKEA can handle both.

I found this set of three colored glass DAKSJUS vases on IKEA’s website while searching through the holiday offerings, and it’s a real treasure of a find for all types of houseplant lovers.

Why the DAKSJUS Vase Set Is Perfect for Houseplant Lovers

What makes these vases special is their shape: Since they all have a tapered neck that separates the top and bottom of the vase, they can hold water in the bottom part, a bulb in the top part, and keep both totally separate — meaning that while roots can reach the water below, the bulb won’t be sitting in moisture that can cause rot.

The function is exactly what you’ll get with classic forcing vases, but the dramatic shape is decidedly more modern. I think the rich colors — a smoky gray, rusty orange, and deep blue — make these look more luxurious, too. The vases vary slightly in size, with all between 1 3/4 and 2 3/4 inches in diameter and 3 1/2 and 5 1/8 inches in height.

Even if you’re not a bulb grower, these vases are also ideal for propagation since the tapered necks prevent water from evaporating as quickly while your cuttings root. The best part, though, is the cost: just $14.99 for the set of three. At a price like that, you could get a set for yourself and for a few plant-loving friends as gifts (the holidays are fast approaching!).
