This Cozy, Unexpected IKEA Find Totally Transformed My Bedroom (It Looks 2x the Price!)
My bedroom is one of my biggest home design pain points. I don’t spend much time in it (aside from sleeping, of course), so it’s become an “out of sight, out of mind” situation — and because of that, it’s often a mess and not as cozy as I know it could be. One of my home decor goals for 2025 is to focus on my bedroom style and find affordable ways to revamp the space with an aesthetic that reflects my husband’s and my tastes — and I couldn’t have guessed that would include new IKEA curtains.
When I think of affordable home decor, IKEA instantly comes to mind. It’s usually my go-to store for furniture, but not ever for window treatments. When a friend recently shared a photo of her stunning curtains, though, I asked her where she got them (the lightweight Amazon curtains I bought years ago didn’t feel luxe enough for a bedroom). I was shocked when she told me that nearly all of her curtains came from IKEA.
As a heavy sleeper, I steer clear of black-out curtains because they always make me feel groggy in the morning. However, after much trial and error, I’ve learned that heavier curtains look more expensive — even when they’re not. I also live in a city, and the light pours into my bedroom at night, which makes it a challenge to fall asleep (my oversized eye mask is the only thing that helps). So, in the name of style over function — and after recently acquiring a sunlight alarm clock — I started browsing the black-out curtains at IKEA to see what I could find.
My new bedroom color scheme consists of forest green shades, along with burnt orange, mustard, brown, and cream. Because I rent and don’t want to deal with the hassle of painting or wallpapering, I decided it was time to step away from the white curtains for the first time in my adult life and go for something bold. So when I scrolled past the HÄGGVECKMAL room darkening curtains in a green plaid, I was instantly intrigued.
At first glance, I liked the concept of these curtains but didn’t think they’d actually look that good in real life — those product photos definitely don’t do them justice. So I jumped in my car and went to the closest IKEA to inspect them myself. When I saw them hanging on the display wall, I was instantly sold.
From afar, you can tell they are heavy and durable, and that green plaid really makes a statement. When I got closer and could actually feel the upholstery, I was so happy with the weight and texture that I thought about also revamping my living room and kitchen window treatments, but that is a lot of green plaid. After getting side-tracked at the thought of all-new curtains, I picked up a set of the HÄGGVECKMAL Room Darkening Curtains and a pack of gold curtain rings.
My bedroom revamp is a slower process, but I didn’t wait to put the curtains up. I immediately tore them out of the packaging and began hanging them to see if they were the right look for my bedroom goals. With just this one quick change, my bedroom feels completely transformed and much cozier than when I started the redecorating process — and I still can’t believe I found them for under $55 at IKEA.
