Even though many straight-out-of-the-box options from IKEA look great, the flat-pack furniture retailer and DIY projects go hand-in-hand. From clever, customized IKEA hacks to the “as-is” section where you can find discounted materials that might be perfect for your next reno, IKEA can be a DIYer’s playground.

You might not know it, but IKEA sells drills, screws, tape measures, and more. DIYers should know that IKEA has an entire “home improvement” category on its website, and its offerings run the gamut from tool kits to decking tiles.

And it’s not just tools and outdoor materials — indoor supplies and finishing products are available, too. I’m a home projects editor, and I didn’t know IKEA sold paint! It’s available in four colors: blue, white, gray, and black. Sure, the paint and stain offerings are pretty basic, but you’ll know they’re a good match for furniture that comes ready-made in those colorways from IKEA, if you’re looking to paint a plain pine piece to add to your home. And yes, of course, the paint brushes you’ll need are available, too.

The home improvement section also offers wood treatment oil and an outdoor stain for your furniture projects. Just note that you’ll have to go to the store IRL for the paints and stains because they can’t be ordered online and shipped.

One of my favorite tools for furniture flipping that the Swedish retailer offers is its FIXA drill template, which will help you place hardware holes correctly and mark them with a pencil before drilling. (In other words, not only does IKEA have stylish new hardware for your kitchen cabinets, but they’ll also help you drill it in, too.)

So the next time you go to IKEA for your shelf or cabinet hack, you might be able to skip the hardware store all together. If you’re shopping online you’ll find all of the above under “home improvement,” and if you’re going to the store itself you’ll be able to add tools to your yellow shopping bag in the Market Hall. Happy shopping and happy DIYing.
