Furnishing any living room, especially one in a small space, can feel like a puzzle. You want a couch that’s big enough to seat your family, but small enough that it doesn’t take up the whole living room. You could mount your TV to the wall and save room on a sideboard or get a media center with lots of cabinets to help contain all the clutter of video games, books, remotes, and more. But what’s the best use of your limited space, especially if you’re staging to sell your home? I spoke to home stager and designer Terry Mainord of Terry Mainord Design to find out how to make the most of a cramped living room using items only found at IKEA.

FINNALA Sleeper Sofa, Beige
$1,499

“In a small space, furniture must be multifunctional,” Mainord explains. “The FINNALA Sleeper Sofa is a queen-size bed in a classically modern frame, perfect for overnight guests. I prefer the neutral beige cover as it acts as a blank canvas, allowing the homeowner to easily add any color or pattern of their choice.”

SOTENÄS Armchair, Hakebo Yellow
$299

When you don’t have a lot of room for furniture, the pieces you do have should make a statement. One easy way to do that is with color — perhaps a bright yellow armchair? “This is a fantastic reissue of a classic 1969 piece,” Mainord says. “I love the funky, vintage shape, and the Hakebo yellow delivers a strong visual punch to instantly refresh a room.”

STOCKHOLM 2025 Rug, Flatwoven
$400

When furnishing a room, don’t forget the floor! “A strong, graphic rug is very on-trend,” Mainord notes, calling this IKEA rug’s geometric Scandinavian-inspired black-and-white pattern “both fashionable and timeless.” This one is made of wool and cotton; plus, it’s reversible.

KALLAX Shelf Unit
$150

Mainord and I are both big fans of the classic KALLAX IKEA shelf; I have one in my living room and one in my bedroom, and Mainord has “several of these units in a different configuration stacked high in [her] office.” Even if you just have room for one, the KALLAX provides so many useful possibilities. “For a small room, this specific configuration can function simultaneously as a TV stand, bookcase, and closed storage,” she says. “It’s perfect for storing books, records, or collections. Pro tip: Easily change the hardware on the inserts for an upgraded, custom look.”

MARISTOVA Mirror
$80

“It's true that a mirror increases the perception of space,” notes Mainord, and the MARISTOVA mirror, with its eye-catching design, will help elevate the entire room. “This one is excellent because it hits two current trends — rattan and organic shape — and is the perfect size for a smaller room.”

MARKFROST / MOLNART Table Lamp
$43

“I love the ’60s Scandi mid-century vibe of this black marble lamp. Placing it on a console or bedside table can bring sophistication and style to any room,” Mainord says. This chunky, unconventional table lamp actually looks a lot like the bedside lamp that’s served me well for nearly six years, and I can attest that a sculptural design like this instead of your standard lampshade really does add elegance to a small room.

KÄLLARHALS Vase, Yellow
$25

One fun aspect of IKEA is that, because it’s been around for decades, the store often brings back old designs (like this funky little KALLARHALS vase) that now have a vintage appeal. “This 1995 iconic piece has been reissued in a chrome yellow that is an absolute eye-popper in the best way,” Mainord notes. “It’s a small detail that makes a big impact.” Plus, it matches the armchair.

IKEA VATTENKRASSE watering can
$15

When you’re always thinking about how to optimize a small room, it’s important to remember that it’s OK to want your space to look great, too. “Even functional items should be stylish,” Mainord says. “This watering can is a wonderfully designed piece that adds a touch of elegance to any space with thirsty plants.”
