In small spaces, maximizing storage can be an endless pursuit. Squeezing in that extra square inch of organization means taking advantage of lots of forgotten places — areas over doors, under sofas or beds, and more. The pinnacle of organization, though, is when you can put storage on your storage, as with this recent release from IKEA: the NORRAVA bamboo lid, made to be paired with the Swedish brand’s beloved RASKOG cart.

The RASKOG is a favorite in small spaces — including dorm rooms! — since it provides instant storage that’s completely mobile. Fans keep the cart in offices, bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens … you name it, and the cart can work there. And while the RASKOG is plenty functional on its own, IKEA’s tailor-made lid adds a second layer of storage that can make it work even harder. Even better? It’s offered in two sizes — one for the RASKOG cart without locking casters, the other sized for the one with them — that are just $7 and $10, respectively. Plop one (or a few) on the cart tiers, and you can create another platform for easy storage.

While you can, of course, use the bamboo lid as is, it’s also an easy hack. Here, find three ideas for giving it your own custom spin.

Ideas for Hacking the IKEA Norrava Cart Lid

This smooth, compact lid will do you favors by concealing everyday necessities — or even that kitchen appliance you barely use but still want around — so it’s understandable if you want to do the same to its appearance. Here are three ways to hack IKEA’s NORRAVA cart lid.

Paint it with sample pots.

You could do an all-over color here, but a few strategically placed stripes would be low-effort and high-impact. For inspiration, look to these chair makeovers from Natasha Landers of @untillemonsrsweet. She gave her existing kitchen chairs a simple yet impactful makeover using sample pots of paints she already had at home. “I knew I wanted three stripes using two color combinations,” Natasha says. You can follow her lead and paint stripes down the center of your NORRAVA cart lid, making sure to match those colors with the rest of your space.

Attach a rack for even more organization.

If you’re already using a RASKOG cart for organization, up the ante by attaching a rack to the cart lid. This $6 OSBIT plate holder can also be found at IKEA in the same finish, and once it’s attached to the lid, you can use the rack to keep files and other office supplies nice and neat as done in this desk setup.

Add a delicate bobbin trim.

The cottagecore trend is still going strong, and you can hack a NORRAVA cart lid to showcase this sweet trend. It’s as simple as cutting bobbin trim to size and attaching to the edges of the lid with glue, similar to the way this DIYer did with her own IKEA hack
