A couple of yards of bold fabric is often all you need to create a cool home DIY — whether it’s a fabric-covered headboard, a no-sew pillow cover, or something much more adventurous. So I was excited to discover that IKEA is selling wildly affordable fabric online.

Back in the day, IKEA sold fabric off the bolt in stores. Over the years I’d bought lots of the brand’s fabrics for small home projects, including a striped fabric for some homemade curtains and a funky floral for a seat cushion. IKEA’s fabrics were always high-quality and low-price, my favorite combination for any home purchase. Unfortunately, the fabric section disappeared from IKEA stores in recent years. So I was delighted when I spotted precut fabric being promoted in a news update from the brand. I reached out to IKEA to find out more about the precut fabrics. Here’s what I learned.

IKEA Is Selling Fabric Again

All fabric will be precut at IKEA moving forward; the cuts are 59”x118,” so a little more than three yards in length. There will be no more continuous yardage in stores, which is too bad, but at least fabric isn’t gone forever! The precut fabric can be found in the home textiles section, next to the cushion covers.

IKEA offers a core collection of fabrics that are always available, but the brand also introduces new fabrics throughout the year. For example, there are several new patterns from Hannah Wilcox in store and online right now, including a sunny yellow floral (shown above) and a mountainscape print (shown below). Currently, IKEA has a total of 17 patterns available on their site.

At present, all of IKEA’s fabric offerings are 100% cotton and suitable for making curtains, crafts, or home accents. While the customer reviews are overwhelmingly positive about the quality of the fabric, one reviewer did note that the precut fabrics were not cut straight, which is good to know if you’re purchasing for a more significant project, like upholstery. You might just want to pad your yardage if you want a straight cut.

With prices ranging from $9.99 to $19.99, the precut fabric works out to a very affordable per yard price of from $3 per yard to a little more than $6 per yard. Anyone who has shopped for fabric lately knows that this is a wildly, affordable deal.

Here’s a fun idea for a scrap: Give your plant pots and vases a makeover with a simple drawstring sack.

Perhaps my favorite idea from IKEA is to add patch pockets to the slipcover of your sofa.
