One of the biggest challenges for Brat Magdalena and her partner in this 915-square-foot home they’ve owned in France for three years was the walls — both having to redo them and having to get rid of some.

She says they had to redo all of them. “They were made of concrete and needed to be completely smoothed,” she writes. “It took a lot of time and energy to get them back to normal, and it’s not finished for every room!”

But the couple also did some demoing of a wall to open up their home and make it a more airy, light-filled space for them and their 3-year-old child. “We knocked down the dividing wall between the kitchen and living room and built a screen to separate the entrance,” she explains.

Their proudest DIY, though, is the hall cabinet, which measures an impressive 5-feet-by-8-feet high. “We used several IKEA KALLAX cabinets,” she explains. “The base was custom-made by my partner, and we bought about 20 baskets for storage. It cost us around €600 in total, but the space savings are invaluable.”

Perhaps the most impactful DIYs they’ve done in the home yet have to do with color. “I hear all the time that there’s a three-color-maximum rule,” she writes. “I don’t follow it. For me, decorating is first and foremost a feeling, a sense of well-being, and a state of mind. I like to change things according to my moods and I don’t listen to certain dictates.”

You can see on Brat’s Instagram just how often the home changes. And there’s certainly no fear of evolving with color, either! “It’s just color — you have to have fun and not take yourself seriously,” she writes.
