“This was the very first place I moved into solo so although I had a style in mind, I honestly had no idea what I was doing,” admits Clariza Abad, who’s a nurse practitioner in hospital medicine. “I also had NO furniture as I was living with my parents previously and decided to leave all my stuff behind so I had no bed, no couch — NOTHING, which I think is really the reason why I didn’t quite know what style I did or didn’t like in the first place considering I had no experience in having my own place.”

The living room is Clariza's favorite element. "I get so much light in here! I have southeast-facing windows so typically get the morning sun. I put a majority of the plants here, and they’re all thriving so well. The living room is also just the place I personally get to hang out, watch my shows, catch up on my reading, host guests — it’s my perfect little place!"

Clariza explains that she moved out of her parents’ house “a little later in life than most do” and thanks to that, she says she’s grateful to have been in a “relatively financially secure place” when it came to decorating her first apartment. While she says she’s had some “growing pains” when it came to decorating this space, Clariza does a lot of research before she purchases items. And she explains that the longer she’s lived here and the more she’s collected furniture and decor, “the more I think I’ve found my own style, which is really a mix of a few.”

Clariza says living alone makes cleaning tasks a bit easier. "I try to deep clean every first of the month, and if that’s not possible, at least within the first week. Regardless, I always try to keep up with vacuuming/mopping/dusting things here and there on a daily/weekly basis. Basically I’ve told myself that if something is out of place/dirty I’d rather take care of it right then and there instead of having things pile up," she advises.

Since this is Clariza’s first apartment, worries over getting the security deposit back means she’s been “hesitant about doing anything too drastic besides a little gallery wall.” She says the overall goal for her space has been to make it a home she “can come back to and feel at peace. I work a relatively stressful job and wanted to ensure that I go home to a peaceful, warm and welcoming environment where I can relax and de-stress,” she writes.

Clariza says some of her hobbies are things like "growing my plant collection to enjoying arts and crafts and reading so you’ll see all of that scattered throughout the apartment. Overall, I think it’s just nice to always have things you love surround you, and that’s what truly makes a home."

Clariza admits that when she moved in, she “wanted to buy everything all at once and right away,” but she quickly figured out that’s not the most economical way to design a home. “Not only are things crazy expensive nowadays, but it also just takes time to even get things that not only you like but also works well in the space. More recently, I’ve tried to kick the habit of buying things impulsively. This also honestly helps to avoid overconsumption. If I like something, I give it a few days. If I still want it days later/maybe even months later (expenses do get tight lol), then I’d be more inclined to buy it,” Clariza advises.

Clariza says that her couch is really versatile. "Though a bit on the pricier side, opted to get this specifically though because it's a sectional so if I decide to move it's easy to downsize/upsize as needed. Also a plus with all the storage underneath that I always love showing off. Can also switch up covers with this particular couch or get as little or as many arm/head rests depending on your style. Couch is also SUPER comfortable if anyone was wondering — always end up napping on it, also enough room to seat guests."

"This is the door entering the apartment. I have a little drop zone right by the door where I can put my mail/shoes, etc. to avoid clutter. I also have my coat closet right there, too (door on the right) that I double as storage). On the wall is the only thing I've attempted to 'DIY' here so far — and it's my little gallery wall I wish to add more to."

"I left decorating this room for last and still working on it. I recently just put up that print above the toilet because I felt it was too blank in here. Also used to have a white shower curtain and wanted to spice it up so during my spring cleaning updated it to a more bright/colorful one — just that little change alone did so much to the space already and warmed it right up."
