I Finally Bought a Bed Vacuum, and After Nearly a Year of Use, I Have No Regrets
I have always noticed when allergy season arrives. The temperature may be so consistently warm where I live in Los Angeles that the start of spring hardly registers, but the same cannot be said for the clear uptick in my sniffles. From the beginning of this season and well into summer, I look at the budding poppies, jasmine, and morning glories with appreciative apprehension. They’re beautiful, but if I get too close, I might as well be an ad for a tissue commercial.
But that’s just the start of it. The other issue is that I’m also allergic to dust. So, as spring begins and the days grow longer, I’m thinking of this moment as a one-two punch: There’s pollen to contend with while enjoying the outdoors, and dust to worry about from deep-cleaning inside. Nowhere is safe!
There are pills to take and tissue dispensers to carry, of course. I’ve grown accustomed to having saline and pillow protectors in my arsenal, too. I also dust more regularly than I ever thought possible. But if there’s one solution that caught me off guard by its effectiveness, it’s something I picked up unexpectedly: a mattress vacuum.
One night, while telling myself I needed to go to sleep even though I knew I’d wake up from sneezing in the middle of the night anyway, I came across an ad for a mattress vacuum. “You don’t know me, algorithm,” I thought. But it did — or at least it knew that if it kept showing me videos of people gliding these handheld appliances over mattresses, smiling while breathing through clear nostrils, I’d eventually want to buy one. I caved, and when this mattress vacuum arrived at my door, I seriously considered returning it. But, with my midnight sneeze alarm in mind, I opted to give it a shot.
Why I Love This Jimmy Mattress Vacuum Cleaner
The Jimmy Mattress Vacuum Cleaner has a generous extension cord, making it easy for me to plug it into one outlet and use it on my queen mattress without needing to pivot. It glides as easily as a social media post would suggest, and I did notice deeply seated dust accumulate in its canister as I moved in even swoops. When I was finished, the payoff didn’t seem that substantial, so I also vacuumed my upholstered headboard and have since worked that into the routine.
Now, every time I wash my sheets, I also make use of this mattress vacuum. It adds about 10 to 15 minutes of extra work to the task, but seems to be worth it. At least that’s what I tell myself as the canister slowly fills to the brim, and the UV light ostensibly kills dust mites hiding in the mattress fibers. Heat is involved, too, which is there to get rid of moisture, but I’ve just noticed it as a cozy detail alongside sheets right out of the dryer.
I’ve been using this mattress vacuum for about a year, and while I still have allergies, they’re not as intense as they once were. I can currently sleep through the night — with help from pillow protectors and nasal sprays, to be sure — and I like knowing that my bed is very clean. Oh, and one more detail to note: I also use my mattress vacuum on my sofa and rugs, for added value (it would be especially helpful if I had a furry pet, for those who do).
Do I think it solved all of my problems? Realistically, no. But do I like having one more thing to help me be less of a sniffle factory this time of year? Yes, I do. This appliance may be a luxury, but when my main priority is to rest more easily, I have no regrets. It’s part of the reason why I can notice the better sides of spring.
