In about 2018, my beautiful, innocent, and destructive dog, Blueberry, destroyed the navy blue velvet sofa that I had bought for about $300 on Craigslist two years prior while under the care of a dog sitter. As frustrating as it was to come home from vacation to a partially destroyed sofa, with half a seat cushion missing and a throw pillow totally spent, perhaps even more frustrating was the fact that there was no way me or my partner would be able to spend any money to replace it. We just shoved the sofa stuffing back into the doomed chaise, covered it with a brightly patterned blanket, and knew that we would get a new sofa when we could afford one — some day, but not that day.

In the end it took about three years, moving into a new apartment, and the reasonable belief that our perfect angel of a dog wouldn’t destroy yet another sofa until we felt ready to buy (and afford) a new one. Part of the reason why I waited so long was that I felt that I was approaching a certain age where I didn’t want to buy a sort of crappy sofa for a few hundred dollars that would be uncomfortable, stiff, or that I would want to replace in a few years anyway. We decided it was time to finally buy that “adult” piece of furniture — the kind of sofa that would put us back a few thousand dollars — but that we would have for life.

I knew I wanted to get a sofa from Joybird because my parents already owned two gorgeous red leather chairs and a gray loveseat from the brand and had a great shopping experience with them. So when I spotted the Joybird Lewis sectional, I knew it was the one.

What Is the Joybird Lewis Sectional?

The Joybird Lewis Sectional is an MCM-esque sectional that comes in a few dozen different fabric choices. The back is 28 inches tall, the less deep seat is 42” deep, and the chaise is 60” deep. It’s about 200 pounds. To connect the sofa or move it, you can simply unhook it in the center (between the seats). It can seat a ton of people — I think at the most we’ve had about 7-8 folks cram on the couch — but easily and comfortably will fit a family and a dog.

Why I Love the Joybird Lewis Sectional

I was initially, and immediately, taken by the Joybird Lewis sectional. It had such a deep chaise and seat, looked so plush, and perfectly fit the vibe of the living room of our dreams — a little MCM, a little bit maximalist, and a ton of plush comfort. We really wanted a sectional, and Joybird seemed to consistently run sales, which we wanted to take advantage of. We picked out our sectional layout and our swatch, (deliberating the swatches took forever), and about 10-12 weeks later, we put our blue velvet sofa out to pasture and our golden yellow sectional arrived. (The fabric we picked is no longer being offered for that sofa, but I do love the Bentley Daisy fabric.)

There has been a lot of chatter on the internet over the past few years about Joybird’s quality since they were bought by La-Z-Boy. It was the one thing that made us really nervous about splurging on the sofa — especially as we were buying the sofa in 2021 at the height of pandemic supply chain issues, and I had seen more than a few comments and complaints and even articles about delayed furniture or even furniture that was delivered partially missing. We thought it through and decided to take the risk and it paid off. Our sofa was delivered without any quality issues, within the initial timeline, with regular updates from the warehouse (including photos of our sofa being built!) as to when it would be delivered.

We did get the extra pet insurance for the sofa, which did pay off last year when Blueberry ripped one tiny hole into a throw pillow. (She says she’s innocent). But besides that, in the four years we’ve had the sofa, it’s held up wonderfully to our family of three’s constant use of it.

It’s so comfortable without being too soft, but it’s also very, very soft. We’ve had many guests sleep on it without a single complaint, and it’s broken in really beautifully. It’s easy to keep clean. It’s the best couch for movies, naps, and cuddles, while also giving all of us the room to not touch each other at all if we don’t want to.

The Joybird Lewis sectional really ties our living room together, and the quality was worth the price to us. If I had to do it again, I’d do the exact same thing — I’m so glad this was our first “splurge” purchase for our home.
