11 Ways to Help Victims of the Texas Floods
One of the deadliest U.S. floods in decades devastated Central Texas over the Fourth of July weekend. Over 100 people, many of them children, have been reported dead as of the morning of July 8, and dozens are still unaccounted for, per The New York Times. Ongoing search and rescue efforts to find missing people — including 10 campers and one counselor at Camp Mystic, an all-girls Christian summer camp — are underway. Meanwhile, search and rescue missions are entering their fifth day.
Six Texas counties, including Travis, Burnet, Kendall, Williamson, and Tom Green, have been impacted by the floods so far, but Kerr County has reported the highest number of fatalities, per The New York Times. Kerr County is home to Camp Mystic, which has already confirmed that 27 young campers and counselors did not survive the deluge from the neighboring Guadalupe River, which surged 26 feet in under an hour.
According to Reuters, at least 850 people have been rescued from the flash floods, which began early in the morning on Friday, July 4, and quickly dumped up to 12 inches of rainfall. Homes, campgrounds, trees, cars, and debris were also swept up in the rapidly rising water, including structures in areas previously hit by Hurricane Helene, which devastated communities in 2024.
With so many rescue missions complicated by the debris and ongoing deluges, many people need help — from victims and their family members, to survivors who evacuated and may not be able to return to their home, to those on the ground doing search and rescue missions right now. You can help, no matter where you are.
