I Didn’t Want a Kitchen Island — So I Picked Something Way More Useful
When I first moved into my apartment, I couldn’t have been happier with the large modern kitchen. The room was wide, with spacious countertops and cabinets that wrapped around the entire space.
After spending some time in my new home, though, I quickly realized that despite being lined with coveted counters and cabinets, there was an awkward, empty spot right in the middle of the kitchen. My initial reaction was to bring in an island from IKEA, and call it a day. I thought it would be useful to have additional prep space and a central spot for cooking.
Then I took a step back and re-evaluated what I actually needed. Given how little I cook — and the fact that most of my cabinets and drawers were empty — it became clear that the kitchen island solution wasn’t the best fit for me or my space.
Use a Table and Chairs as a Kitchen Island Alternative
What I actually wanted was extra seating and a more casual place for meals beyond my formal dining table — especially because it’s just me and my husband who eat together on a daily basis. Instead of an unnecessary, potentially oversized island with clunky bar stools, I placed a compact, square table and two chairs I bought on Facebook Marketplace right in the center of the space. This quickly became the best decision I ever made for my home.
Now there’s no longer a giant block of wasted space, and I have a comfortable place to eat, drink my morning cup of coffee, or line up food when we host a dinner party. The table is also at a lower height than the countertops, which results in a more natural flow through the space that I find makes it easier to move around the kitchen.
My experience is proof that an island shouldn’t be considered the default solution for kitchens. Consider keeping things simple with a table and chairs. Not only is there no DIYing necessary, but a table and chairs can also make your kitchen more versatile. Whether you want to make the most out of unused space or you’re craving a place to eat, this quick, effective change might be just what your kitchen needs.
