Your dream kitchen likely includes sleek features that aren’t always standard in many homes, including a quiet pull-out trash can cabinet that discreetly hides away. But if built-ins aren’t in your budget, you may be hunting for an aesthetically pleasing garbage solution.

Stainless steel cans may be prettier than plastic alternatives, but they might not fit in with a homey aesthetic. So when I stumbled upon how a pro-thrifter used a common laundry room accessory in their kitchen, I was immediately hooked.

Rebecca from @my.thrifted.abode posted an Instagram video sharing some of her favorite thrift flips she’s learned over the years. And the transformation that’s getting the most love is the one where she turned a laundry hamper into a kitchen trash can.

How Laundry Hampers Instantly Transform Kitchens

“I picked up this wicker laundry hamper for just $7 and reimagined it as a charming kitchen trash can,” Rebecca told her followers. She explained that this hamper was large enough to fit her 11-gallon trash can with a few minor adjustments, adding: “I did have to trim the plastic with scissors just a bit to make it fit, [but] I think it looks so charming in my cottagecore kitchen, and it’s much prettier than a plastic one.”

“So creative! Love the trash can basket!” one person commented on Rebecca’s post. Another added: “Oh my goodness, stealing the hamper idea so fast!!”

If you’re not in a rush to disguise your trash can, you can definitely wait and see if a hamper pops up at your local thrift store. But if you needed that trash can out of sight like yesterday, then check out this hamper from Walmart. It comes with a flap-style lid and could fit up to a 23-gallon trash can.

This trash can from Amazon would fit in the above hamper with plenty of room to spare. You can also measure your existing receptacle, then grab a hamper that fits those measurements.

And if you’re worried about any odors seeping out through the wicker weave, try sealing the inside of the lid by gluing a sheet of plastic to the underside to keep odors better trapped inside. Or, if the lip of your trash can is fairly flush with the lip of your hamper, you may even be able to attach a trash can lid to the hamper lid so that it seals the can entirely when flipped down. Say goodbye to your ugly kitchen trash can for good. This laundry hamper hack keeps that eyesore hidden away and makes your space that much cuter.
